This is a very old tradition - older than me. But it used to be pretty much reserved to military clubs on-base or bars near the base, that were frequented by servicemen. It's somewhat of a private, personal thing and I'm not so sure I like it being plastered all over social media and the news like some advertising gimmick. It would be like putting your deceased brother's wake out there for everyone to comment on - pro and con.

I understand Gunny, but I do think in this case it is a mark of mourning and respect.

I'm sure that's the intent of the proprietors of these establishments. But I'm also sure that it will draw negative, insulting, and crude comments from some people just because they can. Ever read Kiplings "Tommy"?
