I thought is would be good to have a thread dedicated to discussions of major weather events as they happen ....

8-14-16 .... unbelievable flooding in the Baton Rouge area .... http://timesleader.com/news/575618/3-ki ... ana-floods .... the news coverage is telling a horrifying story of what the folks down there are going through ..... over 2' of rain and it isn't even from a tropical storm or hurricane .... the really terrible thing is as bad as it is down there today, more heavy rain is said to be on the way

It is hard for me to fully imagine the reality of this weather pattern, especially in Louisiana and Mississippi, but also along the weather front stretching all the way up to the northeast. Donations and good Samaritans will help, but to those who live and work there, the losses of property and the sense of well-being are staggering and likely irreplaceable. It's already worse than Katrina and it is far from over. The expectation for the 2016 Hurricane season is not encouraging!

8-15-16 ..... on Friday, Aug 13 we arrived in our camper in Fenton, MO .... it is a community that has been swallowed up by St Louis .... it rained most all of yesterday, not a hard rain but a steady one .... St Louis Flooding ===> http://www.sfgate.com/news/article/Heav ... 142931.php <=== .... about 5AM this morning we were awakened by someone banging on the door .... we were told water was coming up .... we quickly dressed, my wife went to work inside, I went outside ..... I stepped into ankle deep water that had some current to it .... needless to say, under such conditions, everything seems to be harder and take longer .... unhooked the sewer hose and just threw it onto the back of the truck .... the water was way up on the electrical connection, thankfully I was able to kill the power and unplug .... the water connection is under ground so I wasn't able disconnect at the faucet, consequently, we lost our first length of water hose .... somewhere along the way my rain hat fell off, will probably end up in New Orleans someday .... by 5:20AM when I walked up to the driver's side door, the water was up to my knees and the current was stronger ..... have to admit I was delighted at the way the truck hauled our camper out of there .... once we got to higher ground I pulled over and went through the process of hooking up the electrical connection and locking all doors .... we are now in Clarksville, TN and thunderstorms are in the forecast .... thankfully, nothing on that scale

That's quite the harrowing adventure for any man to find himself in, waking out of a sound sleep to rising flood waters; much more so for a man with a cardiac condition! Thanks for telling the story (make that -- thanks that you're able to tell the story), Jebar.

I'm glad you're safe and on high ground again. Next time, in a different thread, tell us about how well you did at the shooting range.

nothing to tell .... as noted, it rained all day yesterday so we never got to the range .... by the time we get home we will have hauled our Henry rifles and a pile of ammo for each for over 5,000 miles and won't have fired a shot ..

that's the plan .... hope to do so within a week or so of getting back home

What a vacation tale you've just spun, JEBar.....scary happening. And what a wakeup call you had!! Grateful that you and your wife are okay.

Your story reminded me of the time when we were travelling from KS to IL during the 1993 Mississippi flood. We often travelled I-70 east through St. Louis to visit family in northern IL. Because we were driving very carefully on that trip, we couldn't get pictures of what we saw as we approached and then crossed the Mississippi River. Never realized how significant and catastrophic the flooding was that year. Here are a few reminder pictures, which don't even come close to telling the story. Some things my wife and I do recall from the river crossing. For a long distance before we reach the river banks, the interstate was significantly flooded, and often down to almost one lane for traffic in both directions. Quite a drive. Then as we drove the bridge across the flood waters, we saw a large farm house, similar to the one in two of the above photos. What grabbed our attention is that the house was about as large as the one we owned in KS. Our house was 2-1/2 stories tall, and the roof peak at highest point was +26 feet from the ground. The house we saw while driving was standing upright in the water, not tilted like the photo. Anyway, all we saw of this similar-sized inland farmhouse above the Mississippi flood waters was maybe two feet of the roof gable --- incredible to imagine our farmhouse being under water like those poor folk experienced!! Flooding does terrible damage.

OK. This will be an interesting, on-going weather thread to read throughout the rest of this year.
Ah.....but never would have thought that the author of the thread would have such a flood story to tell so soon after posting it.....

good wishes appreciated .... when I started this thread, I most certainly had no clue that I'd be involved in a weather event like this .... here is a link ===> http://bellevillemobilehome.com/ <=== to the campgrounds website .... at that link they have a map .... the land slopes several feet down from a high point next to HWY 141 to Saline Creek .... we were on site 222 .... when we pulled out, the water was up to site 205 and rising
