Last week end at the races

Post by bandit1250 » Sat Aug 21, 2021 9:57 am

Went to the drag races at Hagerstown, Md. Mason-Dixon drag strip. A different race than I normally go to at the drags. This race was Volkswagen day and the first one I have ever attended. They also ran the Pro- Stick class cars the same day and that is my kind of racing. I have to admit that the Volkswagen beetles were fun to watch and fast for small engine cars. Some of the faster ones had the front wheels off the ground in three gears and were in the mid to high tens in the quarter. Different classes ran the 1/8 mile and were in the mid fives to mid six second range at 110 mph and a few in the 120 range. One of them I missed the run but my wife said it ran 5.3 seconds at 130+ mph in the 1/8. A young guy drove in an Audi from New York state. It was a pretty new car about the size of a Ford Fusion. I really wasn't expecting much out of it. It was very family looking being a four door sedan. His first run it bogged a little off the line but about at the 330' marker it started to really gather up some speed. Ran a 9.4 second in the 1/4 mile at just shy of 150 mph. After a few passes he must have got a little better with the launch off the line and ran 9.1 at 156 mph. With that kind of speed at the end with a better off the line start that car would have made a pass probably around the 8.70's. I think there was many other people in the crowd as stunned at this kind of performance as I was. It was a fun day even in the heat. Also had our 5 year old great Grandson and just turned 3 years old great Grand daughter with us. They loved the cars with all the smoky burn outs and noise. I asked the Grand daughter if she wanted to ride in a pro-stick car. Her eyes got real big and she laughed and said "Yeah". She is already a little tom boy and stands up well to her brothers.

Sounds like a fun day. The Houston Raceway Park is shuttering after the 2022 season. It's a shame as it's hosted NHRA races for years. I guess the land got too valuable and is going to become an industrial business park.

Hoping the FAST guys will be at Budds Creek MIR in October again. Haven't been up there in several years. Usually they combine it with the Mopar event around late October.

Come up to the Stock/Super Stock event at Mason-Dixon they have usually in early November. It gets a good turn out most years. Cars run great in the colder air in the fall.
