Summertime heat and PESTS

Post by Ozarkwoodswalker » Mon Jul 26, 2021 6:57 pm

Finally has got hot and humid in the southern ozarks.... dont know about the rest of the world, but here in the Ozark woods, besides ticks, chiggers, mosquitoes, it also means the seed ticks are now out in full force ... those wicked little fiends!!! I have at time in my life ran into batchs where I had thousands of those filthy little swines swarming on me at once.... and even small batches can easily be in the hundreds......and each of the little felons is a tiny self contained package of hell in a dot so to speak...( if you haven't noticed yet, I truly hate them)
I recently read a historical journal by a guy named Schoolcraft who traveled through the ozarks in 1819 trying to document the flora, fauna, and mineral potential of the region... he had little to no experience as a hunter or of being out in the wilds...( his admission) him and his partner traveled down the north fork river to the white river, up the white to near present day springfield mo. and then back down the white river to about Batesville ark. Him and his partner then angled back up to st. Louis where they started from. Their trip was in November on through January.. and it got cold as hell, and them camping out on the ground, (not even a tent.) A wonder they didn't freeze or starve... when I first read it I thought, "what a crazy time of year to make the trip" ...
However, I have thought better of that.. it would sure be better to do it then rather than in july and August when it's humid and hot as hell, and the ticks would have eaten them alive...

I do hate ticks.... and heat... but mainly ticks... especially seed ticks....
This thread really needs in a section called "Crazy Rants" .... but where ever the thread is put... I got it off my chest... I HATE TICKS ..

I agree, I hate ticks. You get the wrong one sucking on you, it can pass on disease, and you can become very ill, or die. If I find ONE tick on me... I feel like I'm covered. :?

We keep a pump sprayer by the back door, when working in the woods, I spray my pants and boots with the mixture Miss T keeps in it. Cuts way back on any issues. The dog gets her treatments. Find a tick on the dog? Dead or dying. :D
That'll teach em.

We have a pro spray here at the beginning of spring, mid summer, and just before fall. Not cheap, but there are some nasties here. He does a good job.
;) I don't like the nasties. Miss T hates them.
You can tell a lot about the character of a man...
by the way he treats those who can do nothing for him.

I don't look back at the things I can no longer do, I just look forward to the things I still can.

Ticks are not my favorite either. Find one and feel buggy for a couple days.

It's seasonal hazard. Ticks seem to find me like a magnet finds steel. When I walk around the yard cleaning up I alway can count on one or two finding me. Chiggers are another of my pet peeves. Bites from those little beasts can last for weeks on me and the constantly ooze and itch like hell. Haven't run into any seed ticks in quite a few years - knock wood.

I've tried all sort of repellent liquids and sprays and it still makes no difference. If they're there they will find me. Sometimes I think the have radar tune for me.
