First Henry

Post by T4halo » Sun Jun 06, 2021 8:07 pm

Well, I’m a die hard JM Marlin lever gun guy but there’s a few old Winchesters (pre 64) and other stuff laying around here. I haven’t bought a new gun in 15 years because I love the quality of old blued steel and walnut. Last month while working a contract in Kalifornia my buddy starts talking to me about trying to find a Long Ranger. I tell him to try and find a Sako Finnwolf (rare as hens teeth and pricey) but I wont sell you mine. He tells me to try to find us each a Long Ranger, I tell him I dont need a Long Ranger.

Two weeks ago I stumble into my local Cabellas looking for ammo, there aint none but there’s a BLR. I asked the clerk if he’s got a Browning in 308, he says let me check in back. He comes walking out with a Henry box. Says he’s got a LR in 308. I know these things are $1200+Shipping & ffl fees on Gunbroker. He says with my Military discount it’s just over $850. So, I now own a Long Ranger, first Henry.

Shot it today. Triggers got a little creep and way too heavy but it still shoots Federal 150s into less than an inch at a hundred (prone bipod). With a little trigger work and some good reloads we may be onto something.

I’m kinda impressed.., oh ya, they only had one at Cabelas so my buddy’s still looking for a new Henry in 308. Ha!

congrats on your Long Ranger and welcome to our forum .... do hope your will read and post often .... looking forward to your ongoing range reports and use impressions .... I've owned and hunted with a 308 Belgium made BLR for 50 some years .... its stock is dinged and its blue is a bit thin in a few places .... its action has worn to an incredibly smooth state and I have nothing but praise for Browning's BLR .... all that being said and knowing them both, if I was to order a new one today, my first choice would be a Long Ranger .... be sure to follow the link below to where you can add your Henry to our community's total

Don't worry about getting older and still doing stupid stuff. You'll do the stupid stuff as always, only much slower. Hold my beer and watch this.......

I rarely ever buy a rifle, but when I do, it's a Henry.

Welcome T4 from another Marlin fan here in W TN.
I'm guessing from the handle you are a 444 fan?
I own a pair.

Vaquero, sold my 444 for a 45-70 Guide gun. I have a bunch of old 336’s in 35Rem. Love the early Waffle Tops.
