Re: Hey Coop
Oh heck yes. When I came back from VN I was assigned to a small Army Research Post in Maryland where I was, for a time, the only Army Aviator on the post. I had a U6 Beaver and a Sikorsky H19 to Crew Chief. I had missions to be flown for the labs testing a variety of things, (don't even ask), so I would borrow a National Guard Pilot when needed. A lot of the missions were pretty hairy.
I even had an Dept. of the Army Mechanic that maintained them for me. I got a lot of flight time in them, I had run up and taxi orders with the Beaver, I just wasn't authorized to take off. I could run up the helicopter but couldn't pull pitch so I couldn't taxi it.

Re: Hey Coop
Thanks Al, I know little about 'em, other than they fly and sometime crash.
Hey... How far will this thing go with only the one engine?
Straight to the crash site... oh and about 30 mins. ahead of the Paramedics.

There is alot of cool planes here where my sister lives. One hanger has a Stearman in it. I would like to get a picture of it but not sure if the guy will be around. There is also a Cessna 195 here fully restored. Very Cool airplane and I have flown in that one.
Here is a photo of that flight

Re: Hey Coop
There's a small town with an association and old airport that keeps up old planes. They have a fund raiser "Fly In" every spring. It was cancelled last year and don't know if they had it this year. I try to go and look at all the neat planes:

Re: Hey Coop
Back in the 90s three of us took an Alaska trip and I got to ride in a Beaver once more. We flew Air Alaska into Ketchikan and then took a bush plane on floats up into the mountains on a remote island. We leased a Forest Service Cabin and fished for salmon for a week. Actually, there were so many salmon it got boring so we went after trout. Then that got boring and there wasn't much else to do. We drank a lot.
This is not our plane, but similar. I was disappointed because I thought maybe I'd get a chance to fly one again, but the dang thing only had single controls. Oh well, it brought back memories.
Low, slow, and reliable. In Vietnam the VC didn't want to shoot at one because they threw too much hot oil when hit.

There was a similar place like that in Virginia that I used to visit when I lived there. Lots of fun but usually didn't tell themShakey Jake wrote: ↑Sat May 08, 2021 12:18 pmThere's a small town with an association and old airport that keeps up old planes.

Today chills ran up my spine as they always do when I see something from that era. There is nothing cooler to me than the sound of a radial engine. Anyone who has a love for planes can appreciate those ole warbirds from WW II. P-47, P-51, P-40, P-38, and one of my favs the F4 U Corsair. There is a young lady here in her 20's who owns this plane and her mother and father are both pilots. She is also a pilot. This plane took someone for a ride on mothers day and I was there to enjoy the run up before take off. It was spine chilling cool. I know ole Coop will know what this one is.

Re: Hey Coop
Looks like an AT6 Texan. They were used for training during WWII.
I'm guessing as there were some others that were similar.

Re: Hey Coop
We have a small airport nearby which gets quite a bit of traffic. Yesterday while I was outside there was a old military plane buzzing around. Twin engines on the wings but not a very large plane. Had some stripes on both wings and I think the fuselage too. It sounded awesome with those two engines, a very powerful roar that brought a grin to my face.

Re: Hey Coop
Yup Steerman.
JE You're probably seeing what we call a Twin Beech or what the military called a C45 Bobcat.
The Army Air Corp had a bunch of those in WWII and used them to transport officers around.
I flew co pilot in one of those in VN. Well, I sat in the seat anyway. That plane was owned by a
small company called Air America and flew cargo into various places in country. The pilot almost
always flew alone and welcomed the company.
Yeah, that's right. The Air America owned by the CIA. They even offered me a job.
Don't ask or I'll have to ......
