I had found a great deal on RR Ties for my planned range here at the new farm, $7 each. I got the word to come pick them up today. They even let me load at the railhead, one mile from the house, instead of in town, twenty miles away. :yes: This was a big deal, when a sixteen tie bundle weighs 2880 pounds, and I would be buying three. One at a time, if I had to make the 25 mile trip thru town and traffic. Since it would now be a mile, on back roads, at 25 mph... We loaded on bundle, and split one, for 24 ties: 4320 pounds. Slow and careful. Pulled the ties off the back with the tractor.

While pulling the third 16 tie bundle off the trailer, a stack shifted.
Miss Tina was running the tractor and yelled for me to "Get Back!".

I stepped back, hooked a heel and feel backwards. I tried to break my fall.

Down I went. Four decades plus of training kicked in, I tucked my chin and rolled my shoulders, and to one side when I did hit, but the hard packed earth broke my fall, and my left wrist. (In two places.). But, I didn't suffer a concussion, or a spinal injury.

ER doc says it looks like surgery will be required. I am supposed to see the ortpedic surgeon tomorrow. I'll know more once the orthoped has had his look see and had his say.

Sheesh, I was loving the knife work, leather carving, and we were moving into fishing season. I WILL find some way to keep busy. Sort the loose hardware bucket. Reorganize tool boxes, clean out the drawers. Read those magazines I have hoarded, scan the articles I think I'll keep, pass the magazines on...

I am very sorry that this happened to you. I hope that the Drs . will be able to put you right again and that you have a speedy recovery.

That does suck! I have been there done that. I have a titanium plate with 12 screws holding my right wrist together. It's been 12 years now and I do pretty much everything I did before except shoot high caliber small pistols and swing a hammer all day.
Get that surgery done so you can start healing. Mine went pretty quick. I was riding my Harley in no time.

So sorry to hear that, hope all goes well and you heal up fast. Glad it wasn't worse.

Man that is a tough one. Hope you can heal up and get back to full function soon. Are there any folks that could help get your range together a little at a time?

Sorry to hear about that. You’ll be fine. I crushed my fingers on May 17/2017, had surgery on the 18th and was fly fishing on the 19th. The doc asked what my plans were for the weekend (I crushed them Thursday eve) and I said “I’m going down to Washington to go fly fishing”... He said “attaboy”.

Don’t let it get you down, and do any physio they tell you too. I did 95% of what I was told, and still can’t bend two of my fingers properly. They do hold a beer well however, so silver linings etc.

Man sorry to hear, that really sux. Is it your shooting hand ? I picked this magazine loader up works great, it's used by a one arm man, NO joking it really is. Heal quickly

A little humor in the ER yesterday...

We spent between five and six hours there. The first two or so in the waiting room. My pain level was high.
We got back to an exam room, and a half hour later, a young PA comes in, followed by a medical student. Before someone asks, yes, she was. Hawt. Young, blue eyed, blond. (The student could have been related, Hawt2)


She began her initial exam, asking the usual questions. She asked if she could begin the physical exam, and I agreed. She started squeezing, prodding here, and poking there, all the while, asking about the pain here, discomfort there.



I told her there wasn't any real pain, other than the left wrist.. "If you squeeze my left wrist like that, or poke it like that, I will likely bite your arm."


She couldn't help herself, she glanced down at that bare arm. I know she was thinking, "Should have worn the lab coat."


She had started on the right side of the gurney and efficiently worked her way around. Not bad for one so young. She got to the wrist, gently lifted, gently squeezed, poked, prodded. When she twisted, the bones... Ah, broken bones grated, and pain shot up my arm at 10+. I flinched.


I couldn't help myself.


I gave a low growl and chattered my teeth behind my covid mask.


She jumped a half step away, before blushing pink and laughing. The student was dying.

The follow-up story is SO much better than the original post, thanks for sharing! Sorry to hear of your mis-hap, and here's sending good wishes your way for a speedy recovery. Please keep us posted and best of luck with the surgery (if that's indeed what it comes to).

Well, you really are a broken Marine now.
Three years ago, on Christmas Day, my wife fell on ice walking into church. She was walking
beside me and then she wasn't. She shattered her wrist. I thought we should go to the
Emergency Room right then, but she said, "After church!"
She has the surgery and has a plate and screws in her wrist but that hasn't slowed her down
a bit. Today you cannot tell she ever broke her wrist. She has full movement and no pain.

What unfortunate timing to have an injury. Just when you were getting your range set up. Too bad we are all scattered across the nation or we could have a range building party. That would be fun.

Heal quickly and hopefully stay pain free.

I say it's all about perspective. I knew I had broken my wrist when it happened because I both heard and felt the break(s) occur.
I didn't want to look, but when I looked down, I saw this...


I was pretty sure it wasn't supposed to curve like that. I was also pretty sure that the flare of pain wasn't supposed to make the earth spin and tilt and my stomach do the same. Unlike the femur fracture, I didn't scream like a little girl from the pain. like the femur, I didn't cry, but I did use language that would make navy chiefs blush.

after six hours at the ER, I arrived home like this...


I have spent the day jumping thru hoops, trying to get the necessary approval to see the surgeon. The pain meds only take the edge off. Turn the hand wrong and you get a free reminder of the error of your ways. They are working on it.

I was asked about the plan for the range layout on my other forum....


I have had it laid out in my mind for between six to nine months. I have the range house, with all the goodies inside already in it's spot. It contains the targets, target frames and bases, steel targets, gongs, pepper poppers, sorted fired brass, folding table, range box, etc. That's Miss Ts coop in the background.


The range runs down among the trees, across the creek, up toward the pond. The berm will be placed on the near side of the pond road at the end of the shooting lane. The targets, whichever types are chosen, will be placed in the natural depression, below the crest of the pond road. I'll have about 80 to 90 yards laid out. Most of my shooting is handguns, but I set up the range to allow more than fifty yards to sight in the varmint guns. With 90 yards, I should be good. I can tweek about 150 out of it if I really need to.


I have spent most of my life on ranges, and I know they aren't usually in areas shaded by trees. This is Oklahoma. The summers here can get brutal. Three digit temps. Also, "The wind comes whippin down the plain..." isn't just a cool song lyric. It blows here. (The wind y'all, THE wind.). The layout of this range was chosen to provide a touch of protection from the heat, AND a windbreak.

What? yes, those do look like cow pies on the range, likely because the milk cow left them as she mowed the grass. lol
