the Rio Olympics is due to start this coming Friday .... they do have shooting on the agenda .... https://www.rio2016.com/en/shooting .... just wondering how many of our folks will be following the coverage .. ?

I can't say I remember this being televised in the past, at least not prime time tv.

NBC will live stream the shooting events starting August 6th. I'll be watching!

I was at the London games but I have no desire to go to the games in Brazil.

I watch it as much as I reasonably can and will be looking out for the shooting events.

Sounds pretty interesting.

I can't understand why they would have it in what is basically a third world country. Raw sewage in the water, poor housing for the athletes. I don't get it.

I think it was a "politically correct" thing. There had never been an Olympic competition in South Amercia (maybe a reason for that!) so they decided to awared these games to Brazil. I think the IOC is another one of these organizations that is so saturated with corruption that there is no "logical" reason for any of their decisions. And that applies to the organization, not the athletes. Just my opinion. Not trying to start an argument.

I agree, the athletes are just doing what they love. But Rio doesn't look like a very nice place to be to me. I'd have concerns about my son or daughter competing there.

I agree, RanchRoper.

It would be hard to see your child going and it would be difficult not to go if they were competing. It would also be difficult to try to convince them to give up a lifelong dream.

Just a bad situation all they way.

I read in the paper they are advising the swimmers to not put their heads under water. Yikes!

My take is bribes, corruption and anti American sentiment around the world.

I agree.

I dis-agree with the Rio location. There is a whole lot of problems there and more have piled on since the decision was made.

If it were me, I would not go, like some others who have also made that decision.

I'm just glad to not have any young'ins that would be passionately wanting to go.

That would be a tough call to make.

Reminds me of the issues they ran into with the Sochi games a few years ago. If I remember correctly there were stray dogs everywhere, Bob Costas came down with pink eye, unfinished construction and basically dilapidation everywhere, problems with toilets and plumbing....

I understand the desire to spread the games out to other countries but maybe we should stick with locations that don't need a complete overhaul and modernization prior to the games beginning?

I was in Sochi in 1986....lived that summer in Leningrad doing coursework for graduate studies. The conditions you described from a few years ago in Sochi existed then (in the former Soviet Union), and still linger on today. The "overhaul and modernization" never fully happened, and I'm not certain if it ever will....never has been a priority.

Wish I could forget some of those "toilet experiences and fragrances," and the living in and always walking through the "dilapidation everywhere." And for many other reasons, I felt bad and sad for those folk living there. There sure are tough, hard spots to live in throughout our world.

I must admit, however, that Sochi as an promoted resort has some positives. The views and quietness of walking along the shores of the Black Sea are something else...very pleasant to do that. It was an oasis that summer.

I watched 4 soccer games today. Portugal beat Argentina,Brazil tied South Africa,Mexico tied Germany and the USA didn't qualify for the Olympics.
