We have some varmint problems here on the farm, yotes, coons, possums, and the like. They mostly come out at night. The cows are due to calve soon and the free range chickens that drop off the coop roof for a midnight drink of water seem to vanish in a flash of feathers.

I know high end IR scopes can run into the thousands but Amazon lists some in the 650 to 750 range. Anyone had any experience with the mid range cost scopes of this type. I'd want IR since our cows are black. I understand IR would make them glow.

Why don't you put up some motion lights out at the chicken coup? I would think that even with the cost of wiring that it would be cheaper than a night scope.

The coop has motion lights. I plan to sit down around the pond so I have that berm as a solid backstop for the 223. The game cams show them pass thru there on a regular basis. Safer than posting near the coop and shooting across the open pasture. It's 10 acres, but the preacher lives off that way. God might be pissed...
