February Ice Storm

I had one for 15 - 20 yrs, got to where I couldn't handle the cutting well. Had to give it up.

I've been around wood heat since I was an early teen, dad built an addition on the house and put one in.
When I built my first house we had electric heat, but also a wood heater.
Have one here in the man cave, it's a little much for the room , so I hang a fan and blow up into the main house when I over stoke it.

Thanks for that offer Greyhawk! Supposed to be dry and in the mid 50's next week so they say. Hope this is the worst part and the last of winter around here but March can be a surprise too.

Got up in the attic and found 7 splits in the copper pipe. Idiots put pipes in attics down here because 1) it's cheaper and 2) it isn't supposed to get that cold down here. Luckily I decided to turn the water off to the house and crawl my raggedy ole' ass up there to check. I got three of them fixed this afternoon but will have to wait for the others until tomorrow because Hope Depot is out of almost all plumbing supplies. There was a line to get in and the plumbing dept. was a war zone. I'll try to get three more fixed tomorrow and then see about the fourth. I may have to fix it the old fashioned way with heat and solder.

A bowling friend of mine who is a contractor was telling me that the newest Pex pipes can get to well below 0 and not split. I know they had problems with the early connectors but he says the newer ones are very dependable.

That is a very nice stove. I've often thought about getting a stove for emergency backup but we have such dependable power here I've never followed through with getting one.

I have a friend who heats his house almost exclusively with a wood stove but it looks like a lot of work if you cut, haul and split all your own wood. If you buy it already split and delivered it's going to cost more than electric heating with the cheap electric rates we have here.

Turned on the water yesterday and quickly heard the sound of gurgling (air being pushed out by water) so had my son, who was standing by the shutoff valve, turn it back off. I found an additional leak. Good to hear about the pex pipes but I'm just trying to get water back into the house so doing patch jobs. I need to go to Lowes to get more pipe and connectors. Hope I can find them.

I have a smaller Quadra-Fire stove that gets use daily. I don’t use it as my primary source of heat but more as a supplement to my gas furnace. The stove is in our main area of the house and about 12 feet from where I’m sitting as I type this. I burn it from the time I get up until I leave, either to go somewhere or outside to do something. If I stay in I burn it all day. The small fan on the top of the stove is powered by the heat of the stove. It does a really nice job of moving the heat away from the stove. Not seen in the pics is a ceiling fan that too helps distribute the heat around.

Unfortunately I’m just about out of wood for this year. I have been burning the trees we removed in 2015 to clear a spot for our house and shop plus some that were dead standing that I took down. I have this pile of rounds from late summer 2020 that I’ll split and stack here pretty soon and that will be my supply for next season. In addition I have another 15 or so trees my neighbor had cut down that I dragged from his place to mine. Mostly smaller firs and pines but I do have one nice larger Tamarac from them. Not many Tamarac’s on our properties and they are such a beautiful tree in the fall nobody wants to cut them. Happy to have my neighbors.

Hatch... that is a very neat looking stove setup! We used to have a wood stove in the den years ago but did away with it. Good to have though when power goes out.

we used a fireplace insert for many years .... as wood got more and more expensive in our area, we decided to move away from using it .... once in a while we can't help but wonder if that was a good move

Just now noticed, temp is above freezing, for the first time in days. Whew!!

We are at 33F which is great for limiting the ice build up. Think we might make it thru this one okay...I hope.

We're up to 29°, which is the highest it has been since the weekend, showing 31 for tomorrow and 40 on Sat. Yee Haw.

The farm we sold in Central VA had a 22k whole house genny, it was a major selling point. I know the new owners are loving it now. One of our first projects here in Oklahoma was to add a 22k genny to this farmhouse. We have had below zero temps, over a foot of snow, record breaking for this area, where snow rarely sticks, and never lost power during the storm.

We did lose power several times during the high heat of the summer from blown transformers, but the genny covered it.

@ Hatchdog: I have noticed those fans and wanted to get one. The better half was not sold on them, until he saw just about everyone with a wood stove with one. Now his curiosity is peaked.
@Marine: I would love to get a generator here that is one of my list toppers.
We have never lost power or anything here yet. I just like being prepared.

I have two stoves in my house, the other is the exact model of Hatch's. Actually in total I have 4 woodstoves! Two in the house and two in other buildings. I do like burning wood. The stove in the picture is made out of soapstone.

Round 2 of the ice storm is over and gone. We still have power and the heat is working well. Life is good!
