Your comment about the curvature of the stock is what would make me hesitate, but I'm no woodworker! Sounds tricky.

Cool idea, but I like your "hot glue" notion as well, just to make sure!

One of the issues is that the stock is curved, so getting the coin seated at the proper depth would be a bit tricky. Don't want to bend the coin, and the only other way to get it flush all the way around would require some judicious sanding and refinishing.

right up front, I have no wood working skills whatsoever .... in looking at our BBS, I noted the curved stock and wondered how you would handle ..

Most stocks and pistol grips have some curvature to them. Back in the day, British soldiers would often put a penny (theirs not ours) in their rifle stock for good luck in battle (WWI) because it had an image of the Queen on it. They didn't worry about stock curvature, but it would have been simpler since the penny was only .8" diameter as opposed to the Morgan at 1.5".

I've done other inlay on pistol & revolver grips, but only wood on wood, so curvature is not an issue.

This was a pair I did several years ago. The stripes were cut from ebony on a scroll saw, inlaid about 1/4" into birdseye maple. Lettering was laser cut. Not my best work.

If I decide to do this, I have a truck load of scrap wood I can make a dummy stock out of to figure out the details of cutting before I dive into the actual stock. That's how I usually proceed with other stuff I've made.

Just like staining wood to get the color you want!!! Try on test wood first. You've got the tools to simulate stock curvature on scrap wood. You know more than I about woodworking, so personally I still stand behind your idea and say go for it!!! No big loss relatively, even if something ain't perfect . By the way, I think the grips on that 1911 look great!!

Of course, it could be inset below the surface with a non linear relief all the way around. Probably would look OK. It would be much simpler than trying to flatten the stock.
