Well, I guess we are suppose to relax in the lounge.

No thanks - I am a member of a 'local' PNW forum that didn't start off this way but in the last couple years has certainly migrated to heavy politics. The ridicules part is (and no one really gets it) is most of the members (those active anyway) simply repeat the same drivel over and over - mostly to 'hear' themselves or to get 'puffed up'.Yup Castboolits will enlighted you for sure.

I think most people know how to kill a forum. Here, we seem to know how to let one thrive. Great members talking about great subjects with friends.

Good to know. Maybe I was a little harsh on the salesman but he certainly could have explained store policy a little better.PT7 wrote:OP TommyMac,
I needed to grocery shop today, and near that store is a Dick's shop. Decided to go in and "test" the procedures in this MO store, per your original comment. My curiosity was piqued when I read your vent.It was also a good excuse to browse their racks of shotguns....just for fun. Yes, I do know that is dangerous to my wallet, but had good controls in place today!TommyMac wrote:Just want to vent a little...... I have never been asked to see my license just to hold a gun......Oh well, I'll keep waiting for my Henry i guess.![]()
OK. I asked the manager if I could look over a 20-ga shotgun. FIrst thing he asked me was to see my driver's license.
Test done with the same scenario you had.
Then I asked him about the need-to-see-the-license regulation, and he said it is a Dick's nation-wide policy for their shops.
So not only was the "display rack shopping" fun, I learned some things from this manager. It was an interesting LGS visit.
Oh yes, my original comments plus this note might now be worth that famous 2 cents.Have a good day.

Re: Dicks lost a sale
The reason Dick's wanted to see your I.D. is because a lot of firearms go missing from stores like Dick's. Employees steal them and say a customer walked out with it. If they took their I.D. the employee can't say that. Any store that asks for my I.D. tells me they have a theft problem by employees.
I was told this by my local gun store. I've known him for about twenty years and he is a retired sheriff deputy. He said whenever a gun goes missing from a department gun store that it is the employees that get arrested in the end.

Man ! I would have never thought this one up but it makes perfect sense!Employees steal them and say a customer walked out with it. If they took their I.D. the employee can't say that.

I think it's more to keep a criminal from running out with a gun. If they have to leave their ID they're less likely to head for the door.

Re: Dicks lost a sale
I am a member of one, and only one, forum that allows political discussions... they are restricted to the "off topic" section only... and must be marked as political content.Mistered wrote:Probably the BEST part of this forum is the political restriction- any of you’uns A member of a forum where it’s a free for all?
I read a few of the political threads, and close them when they take a direction I don't like. If members begin to get nasty the mods either delete the inappropriate comments, lock the thread, or delete the thread entirely. Repeat offenders are sometimes suspended for a month, or banned from the forum.
I have been a member of a number of forums over the years, and it's not just political content that caused me to leave. I left more forums due to "old guard" members who mistreated newcomers by cutting into their creative threads and disrupting the flow with snarky comments or arrogant replies. A favorite on one forum was to greet every new post for the first month or so of a new member's tenure with, "have you tried the search feature."
Stick me with a fork, I'm done.
You can tell a lot about the character of a man...
by the way he treats those who can do nothing for him.
I don't look back at the things I can no longer do, I just look forward to the things I still can.

Re: Dicks lost a sale
My wife and I went to a LGS to purchase her a Ruger Blackhawk 357. I am more outgoing than my wife, so I started a conversation about a used revolver that they had behind the counter. My wife decided she wanted to purchase it and the clerk said I wouldl have to do the paperwork. I told them that my wife was buying it. She proceeded to tell me that I was the one inquiring about it. I have to say I became a little aggravated . I was very close to being called a liar. I then told the clerk , if that is what it takes , then so be it, I had nothing to hide. I told her I was very disappointed. I said we will take it anyway and they hand the paperwork to my wife. Go figure. I understand that you have to be the purchaser of a weapon, but apparently you are not able to carry on a conversation if it is for your spouse.
Re: Dicks lost a sale
It seems the best thing to do when purchasing a firearm is to leave the spouse at home or come back unaccompanied. A simple transaction seems cumbersome. I understand the desire for accountability. But, what is the point of certifying that you are the user of the firearm being purchased if the retailer is making an independent determination? I guess our laws make a simple process more difficult.
