That there flag statue looks quite familiar....hmm. Oh, yes. We saw it being shown off/held aloft in downtown Kansas City last year, by a bunch of guys in blue shirts and blue ballcaps, riding around the city in convertibles!
That was some celebration!

Re: Official 2016 Baseball Thread
We used to have a AAA farm team in town that was part of the Detroit Tigers. Saw Alan Trammel, "Bird" Fydrich and a lot of other major league players either on the way up or on the way down.
However, the metro area just didn't have enough population to support that level of a team.
Now we just have one of the teams in a 27 and under age limit league. I think only one guy out of the whole league has ever made it to the majors. But the thing is, we have an iconic little baseball stadium (much of A League of Their Own was filmed here) and these kids are a step above college ball and are playing because they love the game. Tickets are cheap ($5), parking is free, beer is cold, burgers/hot dogs are hot and it is just a fun evening. I haven't been to a major league game in five or six years now.
We also have a Division II university (University of Southern Indiana) that won the Div II College World Series in 2014 and a Division I university (University of Evansville) that has turned out several top flight major league players, Andy Benes for one.
I still like watching the majors, especially the Cardinals, but I can sure watch a lot of good baseball all season long for less than one game at a major league park.

Great post White Swirl, a couple years ago I drove the secondary highways down to Texas. I was hungry and wanted to stop to eat when I drove by a playfield with a Little League game going on. I stopped, made a PB&J sandwich and watched the game. It was just as exciting as the majors. I ate in ten minutes but stayed for two hours.

Season opener at KC last night was a squeaker: KC 4 - Mets 3
The stands were packed once again with Loyal Royals; looked just like a WS game!
Now that the fun baseball season is underway, we'll dig out our dvd of "Field of Dreams." Usually watch that once, maybe twice, each season.

M's end up loosing the season opener. Felix had a bad fifth inning plus the infield had two errors in the same inning.

I like the new manager. He didn't burn through pitchers trying to win the game.Deadwood Dutch wrote:I'm sorry to hear that, the Yanks were rained out.

Well, it was a sad opening day here in Wisconsin. The Milwaukee Brewers lost, which means they can to go 0 and 162 for the season.
Seriously, after collapsing the past two seasons, they hired a new GM who has traded the entire team for prospects. It very likely will be a looooong year in Beertown.

Let's go Bucs! Hopefully this will be the year where we can follow through to the end. I went to the season opener this past Sunday against St. Louis, and had a blast. Can't ask for much better seats either! Even got myself a game ball from Geritt Cole.
