I too think Red River and The Searchers were the two best John Wayne movies, hard to say which was the best of the two.

Overall it’s a fairly silly fluff of a movie, but the dialog is terrific. Jimmy Stewart and Henry Fonda make perfect sidekicks....

The give and take reminds me a lot of Lonesome Dove. For example.

Truly one of the greatest westerns ever.

I started to watch the new version of '3:10 to Yuma' the other night - but fell asleep! What I saw of it I liked - as I like both Russell Crowe and Christian Bale and will catch it again soon.

Another really offbeat western is 'Seraphim Falls' with Pierce Brosnan and Liam Neeson. Watch it if you have a chance.

Wow Ed, maybe it WAS the newer one I saw. Been a while. Will have to watch it again. I like Crowe also, just don't remember Christian Bale being in it. I like him as well! Probably just part of my old man memory loss.

I’m not sure I knew there was an “old” one! Not really surprised though, as Hollyweird seems to be having a hard time with originality of late. The past 15 years or so seems to be fairly full of remakes.

Firecreek with Stewart and Fonda is another favorite of mine as well.

Stewart and Fonda but Stewart being my favorite were in a number of fairly good Westerns. Fonda and I can't even name them of the top of my head to include Gun Fight at the Ok Coral which is liked by many but just Ok in my opinion. Stewart just happened to be more my style. The Man Who Shot Libertyy Valance with him, Wayne, and Marvin was real good as well.

How the West was Won which is typically mentioned but just not at the top of my list. Then there is Winchester 1873 and Destyry Rides Again. Heck I even like some of Bob Hope's hokey western stuff. But I guess that's because those were the movies I grew up on when they played them on TV.

For me I think if I had to pick it would be FireCreek because but then again I really like most of the movies and what Stewart did. I think the other I tend to watch a lot is the Shootist and even though Stewart is only a supporting actor in that one he is in it and I do really enjoy it.

Actually it's one of my favorite John Wayne Westerns. He's much older of course but find the movie itself to be one of the better all around movies he's actually been in.


Definitely worth a watch if you can find it.

Actually, was never a big JW fan because of his lack of acting skills. Yes, I've watched many over the years and give his legacy a lot of credit...not saying I don't like him...heck, I used to fly a lot on business and when I lived in SoCal, saw that big statue every time I flew out of JW airport. Would like to see Shootist though!
The thing I always think of when his name comes up is that unique way of speaking.

Yeah, figured you weren't but I just couldn't help myself. True, he wasn't the best actor out there and most of his movies I watch isn't because I expect great acting. Pretty sure you"ll find he still isn't the greatest actor in the Shootist either but I find the movie and all of the components to include script, other actors, and story to be alot better than most John Wayne movies.
