The best and worst western movies:

So many good ones here. A couple others that I've enjoyed over the years: Jimmy Stewart in 'The Naked Spur', good Durango area locations. Richard Farnsworth in 'The Grey Fox', maybe more of a Northwestern... Nicholson and Brando in 'The Missouri Breaks' (Frederic Forrest and Harry Dean Stanton are good in it too). It gets a bad rap, but I think that stems from Brando's character being a couple decades ahead of it's time for 1976 western movie audiences.

Worst? For my money: 'Dead man' with Johnny Depp.

If it's a Western, 'The Revenant' was the most anticipated/most disappointing movie for me in my 60 years. What a letdown...

I agree - I am glad I didn’t pay to see it. Heck I never made it through it on TV. I had a hard time understanding and following the story line. It was convoluted and literally made no sense.

I agree, too. Man In The Wilderness with Richard Harris (1971) was a far better film about the Hugh Glass story.

I just finished[almost!] "The stalking moon" with Gregory Peck, and the last 2.5 minutes were cut out! Arghh![YouTube]. Can one of you tell how that ended? Darn good movie tho. Thanks.

I was surprised last time I saw it, 'The Saga of Josey Wales'

Wasn't just an entertaining shoot 'em up, it was a much better movie than I remembered.

(FWIW so is 'Dirty Harry'. Eastwood's little laugh after dropping the hammer on the empty chamber is chilling, but so easy to miss.)

Not a best or worst, but 'Rancho Deluxe' was on tv the other day.

A 'modern' western from 1974. Jeff Bridges, Sam Waterston, Slim Pickens, cattle rustling, and some fantastic Montana scenery.

Pleasant enough way to spend a couple hours on a cold Sunday afternoon...

A sort of western...just bought Davy Crockett 2 movie Disney set with Fess Parker and Buddy Ebsen. Good fun loved it when I was a kid.

Yep - most of Sellecks' post Magnum PI westerns were pretty good. He imparted a 'realistic' character in all of them without any 'cheesy' humor or other weakness. My personal favorite was 'Crossfire Trail' - and it had a pretty good supporting cast as well.

My aging mind remembered two more of my favorites: "Hombre" with Paul Newman and Richard Boone[BAD MAN!] and "The Bravado's" with Gregory Peck and a super cast.

As far as best, I like most of the John Wayne or Clint Eastwood movies as well as Quigley. I’ve probably seen several of the word, but the names escape me.

No where near the “best”, but probably not the worst, I still find the Trinity series entertaining

I just finished watching for the first time Red River (1948) with John Wayne, Montgomery Clift, Noah Beery Jr, Walter Brennan and a ton of other great character actors from these old westerns. It is currently free on Amazon Prime. HIGHLY recommended, it is a long flic and is regarded as one of the top ten westerns, ever. It is interesting to see Wayne transition from a good guy to a bad guy you really want to see shot dead. LOL. He actually acts well and shows himself to be a mature, well developed actor compared to his fluffy early films.

The real star is the huge herd of cattle. There were suppose to be 9000 on the actual drive in the Chisholm Trail, and sometimes it looks like there are that many. There is a big river crossing scene, half way along, that is terrific and I think it is the best I have ever seen in a western.

The guns are all screwed up though, big time, completely wrong for the period. It starts out in 1851 - Wayne has an 1873 Trapdoor Springfield - and fourteen years later everybody has Peacemakers and 1892 Winchesters. Oh well.....
