Part of the problem is we don't have that dash with a dot over and under it to signify divide. That is the entire key to this question.
This is how the question was asked:
9-3÷1/3+1 =
This is the correct way it is done not using the old fashion divide sign:
9 - 3/(1/3) + 1 = 9-9+1 =
But you must think of it as:
Nine minus three TIMES one third plus one.

So I think the point is that today, rather than look at the big picture to see what is actually going on, young people are more likely to simply input data left to right into a calculator?
I know as a walmart shopper that still uses checks (yes, I'm that guy in front of you), that most today are lost without the calculator.
