Update on my checkering project

I finished up the first panel today with the recutting of the checkering and the border. I ended up a little over three hours in it. It came out pretty good and I am satisfied. After the final cuts were made to the border I sealed the bare wood with Tru-oil using a tooth brush then a clean rag and wiped over it to make sure there was no build up. The borders and the poorly cut diamonds on the checkering detracted from this nice rifle. So now to the other side for more of the same. I may take a little break from it for a day or so. My arthritic fingers don't work like they used to. Here is a picture of it now.

Sir Henry, You can do it if I can. Patience I can't help you with. My wife says I have none. But I think it is a matter of what I am working on whether my patience is good or bad. Recutting checkering is not really hard but you are kind of stuck with what you have as far as crooked lines merging in to other lines and bad over runs. If you are going to refinish the stock the over runs can be sanded out if not to deep. This stock I am working on the rifle was bought off Gunbroker and was miss represented by the seller. I should have sent it back but my wife liked it and we kept it. I put off doing this job for being nervous about messing it up and then when I found NOS wood I thought if I mess it up now I will make the best of it and use it on a every day shooter. If you decide to try checkering a good way to start is by recutting a checkered stock to get the feel of it. A checkering cradle is a great help and can be easily made. I still may put the NOS wood on her rifle and put this wood on one of mine. By the way Dembart and gun line both make nice checkering tools. As far as fun doing this it is a matter of what you think fun is.

Not only could my hands/fingers not cooperate to do that, I would have to have a large magnifier to see that level of detail!
