After Florence

The last post in the original "Hurricane Florence" thread was a week ago, Monday Sept 17th, and Florence is no longer the number one daily news story. But the difficulties, challenges, and peoples' grief continue. And this disaster is no different than the results from the many other major climate catastrophes throughout our country. Over the years, I've had two flooded basements, maybe with the "bad" one carrying about 10" of water and wrecking a lot of stuff. No comparison to the flooding we've just witnessed in NC and SC. Cannot imagine what the thousands of people are dealing with from Florence as the flooding continues.

Those are some of my rambling thoughts. But the reason for my post today is to share the first 15-minute segment shown on "60 Minutes" last night. https://www.cbsnews.com/video/the-dutch ... -the-wild/ It's titled "The Dutch Solution." The gentleman interviewed says that his countrymen have a way to very much reduce the effects of flooding caused by a Florence visit to the US East Coast, or any US coastal area.

What was most interesting to me is that the mayor of Hoboken, NJ has obtained funding and cooperation of her city's residents to move ahead and begin implementation of this protection approach next year, which has been used in the Netherlands for many years now. Note in her interview this mayor also said that a hurricane and its accompanying flooding is not something that is an "if" scenario. She said it will happen again, and she'd like her town to be more proactively prepared.

I sure hope it works. Even though I don't fully understand the "mechanics" behind the structure/planning that will be used, I'm most supportive of the opportunity to save lives after a hurricane hits and flooding takes over.
