Foxes in the Street

We live on the east edge of a small town town and everything east of us is timber or farms, so we see a lot of wild animals come into town looking for food. Was looking out the window around 0630 this morning and there was a Vixen and two of her Kits in the street right across from our House. A car came down the street and hit one of the Kits. The Vixen and her other Kit took off. The one hit, was laying along the edge of the street, kicking, and still alive but badly injured. I called City Hall and soon a Policeman came over, shot it and took it away. We have Groundhogs, Skunks, Fox, Possum, and even Coyotes in town, quite frequently. Have been watching off and on all day, but haven't seen the other two Foxes.

Urban foxes are becoming increasingly common here in the UK, too. It doesn't take them long to realize that towns are an easier source of food than the countryside, so the problem is only going to get worse before it gets any better.

Sadly, as their habitat gets replaced with mini malls and housing developments while stores and houses sit empty, this kinda thing happens more often. Hardly ever saw deer here till about 10 years ago, now all the time. I had 3 red foxes hanging around a few years ago and saw a coyote about a week ago.

I've seen my share of fox and coyotes and raccoons, early in the morning or at night, when living in big cities, running right down sidewalks and crossing busy 4 lane streets. Most people don't even know they're there. Read a study that found that the urban population density of raccoons is actually higher in some big cities that out in the surrounding countryside.

We've had several foxes in our suburban/rural neighborhood. One summer, a family of them played happily in this same area of our backyard. This fox captured on a trail camera two years ago was not interested in our two chickens, for which we are very grateful.
