PSA - Another Scam, okay two

Post by BrokenolMarine » Fri Aug 08, 2025 12:44 am

First Scam, a repeat of a scam from last year.

Both Miss Tina and I got Texts claiming to be from the Oklahoma MVD (Motor Vehicle Department) saying we had an outstanding traffic ticket and we needed to take care of the outstanding ticket and late fees immediately, as they were going to start issuing arrest warrants on the 9th. Several things wrong with the text.

1. Oklahoma doesn't have a Motor Vehicle Department or a Department of Motor Vehicles. Tags and Driver's Licenses/Titles and the like are handled by the Tag Office and Traffic Tickets wouldn't be handled by the Law Enforcement Agency that issued the Summons anyway.

2. The text was sent as a group text to about 200 people... NOT the way it would be done, if ANY agency was going to send out warnings, they would send individual LETTERS not a group text or email, and you would have fifteen to thirty days to clear up the matter, not three days.

3. The text said they would begin issuing Warrants on the 9th. The courts are not open on Saturday, so they would NOT issue Warrants on Saturday.

4. I have not had a Ticket or traffic violation since 1981 and Miss Tina since 1992, and neither of us in Oklahoma.

5. The warning notice, if valid, would have referenced the subject by name and date of birth, not just started the message with YOU have an outstanding traffic ticket...

Nice try... Deleted.

Second Scam:

Got a notification that an Amazon related scam has surfaced... Amazon advises:

If you get a notice to your phone saying your order has been lost, click this link to set up your refund, delete the notice immediately and don't click the link. That is not how Amazon does notices. We have received several notices in the past, and their notices always state that you should give the order XXX number of days and then log into your account to substitute, reorder, or request a refund.

We never click in line links... safer that way.

It's SO annoying how many scam attempts we have to look out for anymore. I guess that's why I enjoyed the movie, "The Bee Keeper"

Got the same "Outstanding Traffic" email. Fishing attempt. Didn't even hesitate, just kilt it.

I get them all the time via email and text. Out the window they go. The most annoying ones to me though are the political texts and calls Not a scam really just hate them.

My landline gets about a half dozen spam calls each day that are fielded by an answering machine. Contact lists are regularly bought and sold and shared with anyone who wants to pay for them, so I have never provided my cell phone number to any company or organization. They only get my landline phone number. I also don't use retail companies' mobile apps.

Seems like a good strategy, so far. I have never gotten an unwanted text.

We have four kids, seven grandkids. We answer in case it's one of them calling from a borrowed phone. I get appointment cancellation notices by phone from the docs, dentist, and the VA, as does Miss T. All too often these are done out of office by contract workers using "blocked number" phones. We block the numbers of the BS calls, but there are a lot of them... Lately Miss T has been getting hounded by Medicare Insurance Companies...

Sheesh.

I got a call from a "Federal" agent a few weeks ago. She must have been stationed overseas for a while as she seemed to have picked up a very heavy foreign accent. It seems a shipment I had coming had been intercepted by agents and was full of narcotics. Well, did I have a shipment coming? I don't know I said. Well a shipment to you was found to be narcotics, did I know that? No, I replied, will I have to re-order or something I asked? Sir, did you ...... are you..... (click). I guess she hung up.
They didn't call back.

Some times it's fun to have fun. They are very annoying though.

Don't remember all the details but a few years ago I got a phone call saying I would need to send a certain amount of money or a warrant for my arrest would be issued. I said I'm broke, I'll be home for some time so go ahead and send the cops, they hung up immediately.

I no longer have a landline and with a couple of anti-spam programs on my cell phone I never get spam calls and the few spam texts I was getting were from a certain person asking me to send money.

I got one of those calls years ago. They said they were FBI. I asked what office? They said DC. In the Federal Building? Yes. Me too, come on down the hall and bring the paperwork. Click.

She lied, so....

I received a call saying I won 7.5 Mil from Publishers. All I had to do was go to Wal Mart and get a $400 prepaid card to prove my identity. I told them I would get it and when they brought the check and balloons I would give it to them. Same guy called 3 days later and tried again. I asked him all sorts of questions and led him on awhile, I was on a 6 hour drive so had plenty of time to kill. He hung up and hasn't called back.
