In a study published in Cell Reports Physical Science, a team led by Professor Dibakar Datta used generative AI to rapidly identify new porous materials that could transform the development of multivalent-ion batteries. These next-generation batteries rely on more widely available elements such as magnesium, calcium, aluminum, and zinc. Compared to lithium-ion batteries, which are increasingly strained by supply and sustainability concerns, multivalent-ion batteries represent a promising and more affordable path forward.
Why Multivalent-Ion Batteries Are the Future
Multivalent-ion batteries differ from conventional lithium-ion versions by using ions that carry two or three positive charges instead of just one. This allows them to store much more energy, making them a compelling option for future energy storage technologies.
The challenge, however, lies in the larger size and stronger charge of these multivalent ions, which makes it difficult for them to move efficiently within standard battery materials. The NJIT team's AI-powered approach was designed specifically to overcome this barrier by discovering materials better suited for handling these high-charge ions.

Hope this works out as I’m very cautious with my Lithium batteries and try hard to remember not to leave them on the charger. A local animal shelter had a fire (no animals harmed thankfully) from a simple battery speaker left on the charger.

Even if they can find a mix of common minerals that performs better, lasts longer, and is safer than Li, it will be years before it is commercialized and comes to market. What they've accomplished so far is impressive due to the AI algorithms they used to find the most likely combination of minerals for experimental test and eval.

I'm sure that lithium batteries will be around for a long time unless they make the new ones in sizes compatible with existing tools. I have 5 different chargers for my misc. cordless tools, too much invested to replace all of them. Also have my charger for 4 different sized flashlight batteries. I'm a bit of a led flashlight fanatic, I have at least 7 or more. I already had a 8000 lumen that is very bright but when Sofirn came out with a reasonably priced 16,000 lumen model that Amazon put on sale for around $80 I had to have it. Insanely bright on turbo but not really practical as it gets almost too hot to hold pretty quickly.

I was given a Fenix Pro flashlight as a gift. It has 5 brightness settings. With the top 2 settings it gets too hot to handle. I use the 3rd setting.
I agree, lithium batteries are going to be around for awhile. There's some new technologies added to them to minimize oxidation of the anodes, that can make them close to forever batteries, they're not likely to ever wear out.
