We bought our first house about that time too. $17K. The monthly mortgage was I think about $71. I don't remember what the taxes and insurance were.... I bought my first very little house in 1978 and my mortgage, taxes and insurance was around $250 a month as I recall. Add to this 9% sales tax but thankfully we have no state income tax.

We finally paid off our mortgage in March. Just a monthly Jeep payment now and that goes away next year.
