Where is RanchRoper?

Seems like he hasn’t been around for a few months. Has he posted and I just missed it?

Probably disappeared back into the 1800s and didn't take his computer along. That's where his heart has been for a long time.

Still kickin', life back in 1820 is good. Been camping lots, was in a shooting competition a few weeks back, my longrifle against a bunch of black powder cartridge rifle shooters. My Frontier patched round ball vs several Sharps, Highwalls, Rolling Blocks of various calibers. Targets from 50 to 130 yds. Tied for first with a Highwall guy. I was the only one to hit a little 8" steel rabbitt at 130 yds off hand. Pretty happy with that. Thanks for checking on me. :)

A buddy of mine and I started a group called Alberta Mountain Men, modeled after the American Mountain Men organization in the US. Requirements are to have all of your gear, clothes, buckskins, camps etc as period correct to 1800-1840 fur trade era as possible. Not so much reenacting but more living history type stuff. Must start fire with flint & steel under all weather conditions, no cots, stuff like that.

Just acquired a new knife recently that is a real nice one. Sheffield brand Nowill 8" butcher. Authentic to the period. Carbon steel. No stainless allowed. :)

That really is a great image, RR. It could be a magazine cover. The editing filter you used on it is perfect. And it does give it the feeling of a painting.

Are you and Badger still herding cattle? You gave us some fine photos of that, too. I've been watching a Canadian TV Series called Heartland for the past few months and have become obsessed with horses ever since. Hope 'ol Badger is healthy and doing well.

Badger, Dakota and Houston are all doing well in their mid-20’s and retired from active duty. Still ride but not as much cattle work. Horses can’t do the 14 hour days on those big slopes anymore. So I just wound the clock back a little further and took up black powder. Still gets me outdoors more than indoors and satisfies my need to connect to a simpler time.

They spent the whole summer on grass. Feeding hay now for the next 8 months.

While not intentional, this stuff might actually better prepare one for a SHTF scenario. :)

Admire your dedication to the time frame. Im sure it helps having someone else involved as much as you are close by. Nothing like that here. There is some but they only shoot every 2 weeks and it doesnt always work out for me. Have a younger man who is a local firefighter and a Lieutenant on the city fire dept. Hes pretty busy so doesnt get out much. Not many old guys around who like to shoot.

Yes our AMM only has 2 members but my buddy doesn’t do the whole camping deal too much so I am out there keeping 1820 alive by myself mostly. But that’s ok. I enjoy the solitude and the grizzlies have taught me to sleep with one eye open, another handy skill to possess. ;)
