Re: Searching for a new home in Montana
Have you thought about a little bit of land you can put a small log or prefab cabin on, big enough to live in but easy enough to manage?

Fit's nicely on the bike...
Doesn't weigh much.
Wife shoots it with no problem.
Shockwave 12 gauge with reddot sight.
Yes, I have a sling for it.

That location where the woman was killed is less than 100 miles due south of Glacier National Park. She should not have been in a tent IMHO. I personally would be WHOLE lot more cautious if I were spending even one night in an area with over 1000 grizzly bears on the loose.

I would be on the thirtieth floor, of a nice hotel, and still have the shockwave handy. Someone might leave a door ajar.
1,000 grizzly bears?

From that article:
"Ovando is on the southern edge of a huge expanse of wilderness that stretches to the border of Canada and is home to an estimated 1,000 bears — the largest concentrations of the bruins in the contiguous U.S. The area includes Glacier National Park."
This doesn't include black bears, cougars, wolves or moose, which are probably more likely to hurt you than the others. It is a place that I prefer to be inside hard walls at night....

Re: Searching for a new home in Montana
We are yanking your chain Sir Henry. Here in OK, we have Wild Boar, Several Killer Snakes that regularly show up on the back walk. I still love it.
The coyotes have killed 18 of Tina's chickens in the last two months. I still love it here.
When we lived in FLA, the Alligators would come into the back yard. Back then, South Fla was a nice place to live. That was about 50 years ago.
You live where you want and just follow the rules to be safe.
A friend lives in Alaska because they love to fly fish. They just carry a 500 magnum handgun or a 45-70 Henry when they fish.

Adjusting, understanding where you live, and respect for the wildlife is paramount. Be aware and know the variables the land might present. Only shoot for reasons of self defense and only if that is the last resort.

Yeah, well here in Minnesooooota we have the dreaded snow snakes. Deadly.
Snow spiders as too. Both are pure white and only come out in the Winter.

Re: Searching for a new home in Montana
Fortunately I would believe that anybody frequenting this website is both well versed and well prepared for defense from the predators in our particular area. What concerns me are all those people who are not aware or prepared for dangerous encounters outdoors. More and more people who have little to no experience are venturing out into situations that could become dangerous. I believe this recent attack was very close if not in the town which is concerning to any of us.
On our recent trip to Montana we passed right by this town. If fact, we were advised to stop into a shop there (forget the name) who is reported to have the best Huckleberry ice cream in the area. We chose not to stop as the town is a couple of miles off the highway and it was getting late and we wanted to get back to the home base.
