My parents home place for sale again......

Post by fortyshooter » Tue Feb 23, 2021 1:18 pm

Yep the first place I touched earth! After my Dad passed away the family decided to sell the home back in 1996. My Mom and Dad bought the place back in 1943 for $ 4400 bucks..not bad for a new 2 bedroom home at the time in what would later become a city.
House has been thru a couple of owners since we sold it and now the recent owner bought it several months back and put a lot of money in it to flip it.
The value of it according to tax records is 126,000 currently but this guy is asking $217,000! in a 120,000 dollar neighborhood.

The landscape around it is NOTHING like my folks kept it where Dad maintained a boxwood hedge completely around the property like a fence which was all cut down by the first buyer.

Lots of memories there of course and Dad had added on another bedroom, bathroom and built the garage himself back in the 50's. Dad was very creative with his building skills and if you look you can still see the little hatch door he cut into the garage/house wall so he could reach in the bedroom to answer the phone while in the garage!! :D There even might be some of my brother's tuning notes scribbled on the clapboard wall of the garage/house from when his 1970 Hemicuda was parked there in the 70's! Have to go by there again and look for that!
The house was on the corner of a main street and that was our "test & tune" area for doing burnouts with the Hemi. The middle school was in a large field across from the side of the house and sometimes with open headers on the Hemi during school hours he would disrupt several classes on that side of the school doing a burnout from what we heard from the younger kids in the neighborhood!

My brother had thoughts of selling his place and buying it to down size since he lives by himself now but don't think so at that price.
I have been thru the place and the owner has totally rebuilt the place and it looks great inside and out. Will see how it sells.

Must add this picture showing my brother's 70 Hemicuda in the driveway next to my 72 Opel GT. Theres the school in the background.
FUN times back then when we would take the Cuda out for cruising the drive-ins and a street race or two!

In '67, the local Buick house had an orange 2 seater Opel. Model escapes me, but the sticker had a $2200.00 price. This was way out of budget of a 12 year old lawn-boy. I rode my bike by it every afternoon on my way home from Jr. High. I did lust for that car. I finally wound up with '64 eight yr old Chevy pickup with short narrow bed and a 3 speed tranny and 6cyl. 231CID motor. I drove that pickup for 12 years and put 4 clutches, 3 transmissions and 2 motors from local wrecking yards. I loved that old truck. It only left me stranded a couple of times. Good Times.

It looks like that Hemi-Cuda is caged. Must have been some pretty serious street races. :D

I used to call the Opel GT a “poor mans Corvette” due to the similarities in the overall lines, just scaled down a bit. I would imagine a nice one today would be worth some serious bucks.

Your folks old house looks very nice. I’m thinking that in my area it would list for well north of 300K if it has a full basement.

Back then it was a bolt in 3 point Lakewood roll bar that was required for the speeds and class we were running...B/ Modified Production due to the Race Hemi setup running the Chrysler Super Stock Cross Ram intake and the other engine mods Chrysler had for that setup.

For exhaust on the street it was a pair of the factory 1968-70 Hemi mufflers used on the Hemi RoadRunner and we had a side exit pipe in front of rear tires like the AAR Cuda. Yes it was loud what with 12.5 compression and the rowdy solid lifter cam the Super Stock guys were running in the Hemi.
Fun as heck on the street with 4.56 gear and the full manual shift Hemi TorqFlite auto. with a 9 inch convertor. We drove around on hand grooved slicks to be legal. All the parts came from the Sox&Martin shop in NC. Not to many would mess with it on the street back then. Ran 11.00 @ 126 and not bad for a non blueprinted just bolt it together modded Hemi by a couple young guys.

My Opel GT...Now I had sold my '55 Chevy and was looking for something different. Why I didn't latch on to a 1971 340 Dodge Demon I don't know.
At a local dealership I saw and liked a 1970 Firebird Formula 400/4 speed but it had around 55,000 miles on it. The Opel GT was just traded on a new Nova and the GT looked brand new with just 4,000 miles on it and for same money as the Firebird. Of course I did some mods on it and it did look like a mini Vette with the 2 1/2 inch side pipe exhaust on one side and the fat tires in back with Ansen slot mags all around. Had a header on it with a new type mechanical fuel injection setup. Always had thoughts of swapping a V6 in the front of it.

Love the look of those side by side carbs. Pretty amazing what could be accomplished with bolt on parts back then.

Funny story.

About 20 years ago my son was in high school and the Fast and Furious movie came out about that time. There was a Import vrs American Muscle grudge race at our local 1/4 mile strip and he pestered me to take him. All the while bragging how these imports with their NOS motors were going to blow these American cars away. Well, even with some pretty long staggered starts the V8’s won every race we watched. He was a little bit less mouthy on the way home.

I can just see your Opal with the slots and the side pipe. I always liked the look of the GT and I bet it was a kick in the pants to drive.

They were indeed a sharp looking little roadster. I envy you. Need to follow your instincts closely. One of the few regrets in this life I made. I was unaware that You Can Have It All!!!
Glad you got to have fun with yours, Jim.

This was my toy. I finally sold it about ten years ago. I didn't drive it anymore and the
wife said why not sell it. OK, I put a price on it I thought no one would pay, they did. :(

Nice pics of classic cars, so much fun to look at and remember the good old days. Never owned a vette and always said I would but probably not now. I would rather spend my old man dollars on a pontoon boat. Now that being said, GET OFF MY LAWN.
