This article by a retired Marine, and LEO, offers some advice re: personal/home defense and the difference between training for competition and training for real life. I think it's well written and might be of some value to new gun owners (Henry or otherwise), or anyone who might gain from it.

WHO’S OUT OF THE FIGHT? | Make Sure It’s Not You

The tactical community owes a lot to the various competitive shooting sports. They have been the driving force in not only the development of more efficient weapons, but also in sights and other accessories.

In addition, they have led the way in developing technical shooting techniques, some of which greatly benefit the tactical community. Depending on which particular discipline you choose, competitive shooting can teach you accuracy, speed, self-control, shooting and manipulating under stress. These are all worthy attributes and clearly should be learned.

However, not all Tactics, Techniques, and Procedures (TTP) translate well across the board. Nor should they. In fact, tactics rarely enter into the competitive shooting sports unless it is a term used to define a technique that formulates a rule. And in and of itself, there is nothing wrong with that.

When training, we emphasized this phrase, "reluctantly reholster.". In essense, it meant after drawing to and neutralizing a threat, we scanned the area, 360 degrees, then slowly and safely reholstered our weapon. The draw may need to be smooth and fast in response to an unexpected situation, the reholster does not.

Bottom line for me - but not included in the article:

Use yer gourd for something besides a hatrack.

I'd also add to what the author said about the bad guy getting vote on when the fight ends. He gets 3 votes actually; That one, and he also gets a vote on when and where the fight begins, and a vote on how it proceeds.
