Could Have Been Bad
first 5er Ice Fishing trailer that I've ever seen .... the truck towing it out on the lake broke through the ice right at the edge of the lake .... this could have really been bad but its my understanding that a bunch of fellows jumped in and were a able to get both the heavy trailer and the truck out

Yep it sure could've.
Global warming I guess.
Really though they haven't had the constant cold to make the ice Yet.

I don't know what's worse - the manufacturers who build this stuff looking for more avenues of revenue or the people buying them with totally unrealistic expectations along with their complete lack of awareness and understanding of nature such as the risk of dragging heavy objects onto an unpredictable surface such as ice.
Yes this could have been very bad and there will most likely be worse outcomes in similar circumstances.

Re: Could Have Been Bad
Up here in the land of 10,000 taxes they actually drive Caterpillar tractors out onto the ice towing elaborate fishing houses. Then they set up street signs and plow roads. No big thing.

Twenty or more years ago they held the Super Bowl here in the old Dome. John Madden who was a well know coach and then became a sports announcer, always drove a motorhome to wherever the game was because he hated flying. He loaded the motorhome up with his friends and much to their horror drove it out on Lake Mille Laq where he parked on the ice and they went ice fishing.
Course every year we do put a few rigs through the ice around the state.
BTW, John always cooked a turkey dinner in the motorhome and it was considered an honor to be invited to dinner.

Re: Could Have Been Bad
Oh hell no! I totally agree. My motorhome will never be out there either. But consider this, they have around four foot of ice to drive on.
I used to snow mobile on our lake but even that made me nervous.

Along with the gas and oil leeching out of these submerged rigs as well.Course every year we do put a few rigs through the ice around the state.
I hope the owners of these 'mishaps' are 'at their own risk' and are appropriately fined/charged for removal/cleanup efforts.

Re: Could Have Been Bad
Driving vehicles across the ice and dragging campers out on the ice for ice fishing is also a tradition, here in the north woods of Wisconsin, but in the same way, there is a tradition of knowing what ice is safe and what ice is not. These last 6 years have been rough in terms of good ice, not just because our winters are getting warmer, but also a lot wetter with more and more snow and much of that snow snow the wet and slushy type. Worst case scenario of good ice because that snow acts as insulation, preventing the formation of good ice, even when temps fall below zero. More rain and snow also makes for higher water levels and since many of our lakes are spring or seep fed, some areas aren't even safe for walking, let alone vehicles. We are now getting rain and ice storms in the middle of winter and that was unheard of a generation, ago.

Re: Could Have Been Bad
Yes, of course they are. The DNR oversees any mishaps such as that and the vehicles have to be removed immediately. The owner pays for it.Mistered wrote: ↑Fri Jan 24, 2020 10:08 amAlong with the gas and oil leeching out of these submerged rigs as well.Course every year we do put a few rigs through the ice around the state.

Re: Could Have Been Bad
I have enjoyed watching car racing on Tupper Lake in the winter time. I see trucks out on the lake fishing when I travel up to camp.

Re: Could Have Been Bad
I recall back in the late 70s when I lived in the Twin Cities someone tried moving a house across Mille Laq and lost it and the semi when they crossed a spring. Read about it into the summer when they were using a barge to remove the house and the truck and were being fined everyday until it was all done.
