He ignored or missed that "The standard convention holds that multiplication and division have equal priority" is true except when parenthesis are involved. Hence this whole statement gets priority 2(2+2) over division in both BODMAS and PEMDAS order of operations rule.

Aside from ignoring the nuances in the presence of parenthesis, Strogatz also ignored that the equation can be expressed as a ratio or fraction by replacing the ÷ with a / like this 8/2(2+2).
