Andrew Burgess invented a pump shotgun that folded like that. The pump handle was the pistol grip.

I have a friend that owns a couple Burgess lever guns in 44-40.
They have a unique loading gate.

Yes I think that it was a sliding loading gate like the 1881 Marlin. And the Winchester Colt "deal" is not true. The 73 Winchester sold more rifles in a few weeks than the Burgess did over it's entire production so the big W was not worried about the competition from it. Also the Burgess lever gun had no dust cover to keep dirt out of the to of the action. Colt did use some of his patents on the Lightning slide action rifles.
