A very fine Remington 870

Post by bandit1250 » Mon May 31, 2021 9:35 am

Yesterday a neighbor/friend stopped by and wanted to buy my 1962 12 ga Remington 870. It is a 30" full choke plain barrel with standard 2 3/4" chamber. He knew I had it from seeing it when I bought it several years back from a private party in my home state. This shotgun was never hunted with and only been fired a few times by the owner. With me having several Rem 870's and this one being in pristine condition I didn't have the heart to hunt with it and take a chance on falling with it and messing up a shot gun that had survived all these years in this condition. I still have a 30" full choke 870 that is in excellent condition from the mid 70's that I will hunt with as it has seen hunting use before and also have a short barrel screw in chokes National Wild Turkey Federation camo finished one I use quite a bit in hunting season when a shotgun is needed. So it now has a new home and the new owner can decide whether he uses it or not. Sounds like he will only use it for shooting matches in the factory stock barrel class. I felt the $500 for it was a good price for it even with the prices guns are selling for right now.

As a 1962 vintage I’m sure it is a Wingmaster. $500 for a Wingmaster is a great price, especially one in the condition you describe. Your neighbor I’m sure is delighted.

Yes Hatchdog it was the real Wingmaster polished blued model like the ones I grew up with and loved them back then and still do even after all these years. I have never had to put any replacement parts in any 870 in all my years of owning them which was many 870's from 28ga up to 12 ga guns. 28 ga Remington Wingmasters were real gems from the 870 line up. If I could go back in time I would have kept the 28 ga with a the three barrels I had with it and the three TC 870's from the 70's that had the most beautiful wood of any I had ever seen. Had to sell them off during times that were tough when my second wife and I got off to a slow start financially and something had to go and shotguns didn't mean as much to me being a rifle shooter. I would love to have them now even if I never used them. They were truly show pieces.

Have a left Remington 870 Wingmaster I bought in the 70’s. Probably has a bazillion rounds shot through it: trap, pheasant, duck, grouse hunting. When I retired my kids went together and bought me a left handed Benelli Montefeltro. The 870 went into a gun cabinet and just sits there. I know I should sell it but I used for 40 years, tough to let go.

Your neighbor is a friend. You treated him as such. Good for you. The shotgun is in good hands and will be well cared for. Nice job!

Very nice of you bandit. I used all the popular pump guns for bird hunting back in the day, including the Ithaca, the Model 12, Stevens, the Mossberg, later the Browning and more. The Wingmaster 870 was my favorite, by far. Never had one fail and no other pump gun fit me so well. The only bird gun I liked better was the Remington 1100.

I have a late 70's maybe early 80's 870 Magnum. Bought it when I lived in Illinois for pheasant hunting. 28" vent rib barrel, three chokes, beautiful furniture and a 3" chamber. Have not shot it in probably two decades, but have no reason yet to sell it.
870's are great!

I bought an 870 in 1968 and still have it. It was the last year without the factory recoil pad so I put one on and the length of pull was good for me being six three. This was before the days of screw in chokes so I ended up with three barrels for it. It has been shot a lot as our club had a trap range and I loaded my own shells. It has bagged a turkey on the wing and plenty of ducks in Arkansas. I never had to fix it for any reason and now the action is very slick.

I have an 870 20ga, Wingmaster with no vent-rib and 28" fixed mod choke. Also have an extra barrel that is 26" with fixed I/C. 2.75" chamber, deep bluing and the stock is still in perfect condition. It's so nice, I bought a Mossberg 20 ga to take to the field. They simply don't make 870's like ours anylonger. Mine is staying with me.

My 870 20 ga is a 1953 28" full choke in like new condition. I put a stock on it from a 12 ga that had about an inch broken off at the toe. I cut it off at the end of the break and I had a new brown Marlin horse and rider rifle pad for a 39A and put it on it to get the length I needed for hunting. Refinished the old stock to match the wood on the 20 ga so it looks right. I occasionally carry it in the woods but not often. My best friend is trying to get me to sell it to him as it is the same year he was born. I guess I really like my 20 ga 870 when my best friend can't talk me out of it. ;)
