Magnum Cylinder for Heritage Rough Rider .22

Post by Danwin22 » Sat Jun 18, 2016 10:30 pm

I’m a bit concerned about buying the .22 magnum cylinder for newer Heritage Rough Riders.
When I bought my first RR, it was a 6.5” model with an “M” range serial number.
I called Heritage and they said their magnum cylinder would fit. It did and works fine.

Then I found a 4.75” version and the magnum cylinder does not fit.

Last week I bought another 4.75” and the magnum cylinder does not fit this one either.

I noticed that the first one has a definite 4-click hammer. The other two, with serial numbers in the P and R series only have a 3-click hammer. They go right by the third click position and end up at the same position as my 4-click model.

Another difference is the first one simply has a serial number, the other two have a small stamped Taurus logo.

Considering that Taurus now owns Heritage I’m wondering if they thought the 3rd click might have been dangerous because you could actually pull the trigger when the cylinder was not fully rotated to the firing position. I tested mine with unloaded BB caps and even though the firing pin would make a mark on the outer edge of the BB cap rim, it would not fire.

If you have one of the newer Heritage Rough Riders with the 3-click hammer and Taurus logo you might want to contact Heritage before buying a magnum cylinder.

Hey Danwin22,

What do you mean the magnum cylinders do not fit?

BTW, mine came with the mag cylinder included and the serial number starts with a "C" (for combo?).

With my M series model you simply open the loading gate, move the hammer to notch two, remove the cylinder pin and pop out the cylinder. Drop in the magnum cylinder, push in the pin, close the gate and you're good to go.

With the P model I have been able to get the magnum cylinder in a couple of times by rocking the cylinder and moving the hammer at the same time but this can take a half-hour or so. I don't consider this to be a normal fit like my "M" series or a Ruger Single-Six convertible.

The third version, with the "R" serial number is the worst. Using the wiggle-everything method I did manage to get the cylinder in place but when the hammer is cocked the cylinder starts to rotate in the opposite direction. A bit scary.

Most of the time, (on the P & R guns) the cylinder only goes in just so far, with about 3/32" of being fully seated.

I've got two one starts with a P and has the 3.75" barrel, just bought that one a couple mons back.
The other I've had for a long time, several yrs. and starts HZ and has the 6.5" barrel.
But both of mine came with mag cylinders. I've not tried to fit the cylinder s in the opposite guns.
I'll try it here in a min.

Alright...........

Well both cylinders fit in the opposite guns with no problem.
They went right in and spun just fine.
They looked to line up and everything.
Sorry yours don't work.

I bought my 6.5" Rough Rider .22 about seven years ago and I ordered the magnum cylinder but I hardly ever use it. Then about two months ago I stopped at Cabela's and bought the .22 Rough Rider with the 4.75" barrel. They also had the one with the 4.75" barrel that came with the magnum cylinder but I saw no need to buy another one with the extra cylinder and I only plan to shoot .22 magnums out of the 6.5."

Dutch my older one seems to be just a little more accurate with mags vs the lr.
This shorter one I don't know yet, as I haven't shot it enough yet to make that statement.
Hate to admit, but I shoot the older Heritage better than either of my Ruger single sixes. :o

I believe the barrel diameter is larger on the .22WMR which makes it a tight fit. The .22LR doesn't shoot as straight because it has too much slop. Pistols designed for just .22LR have a different barrel which won't allow the .22WMR bullet to go through it. So they change the pistol design so you can't put a .22WMR wheel in a .22LR only firearm.

I don't know that this is the case here but in general it is true.

Same here, both cylinders go about 90% of the way in and then may be a "little" bit of wiggle to align.

UPDATE: OK, today I sat down with my two Rough Riders that wouldn't match up with the magnum cylinder and played around, rocking the cylinder, moving the hammer around and lightly wiggling the trigger. I managed to get the magnum cylinder in both guns.

I worked the actions until my thumb was sore and my forearm started to cramp. Looks like both guns will work fine in time with the magnum cylinder and they just have to work their way in.
