I might add one to my collection if I had the rifle. Would snuggle right up under a jacket, and be there on your belt in camp if a bear, or other unwelcome guest showed up. Perfect for flyfishing Alaska.

What do you think the MV was with that short barrel. He handled that pistol very well!

I'm not sure what the muzzle velocity was, but that first group was nice, he rang the steel at twenty five and fifty yards, and the muzzle energy displayed was still impressive for that backup piece. If you chose it to back up your hunting rifle, you wouldn't be undergunned, could use the same ammo, and your rifle wouldn't be leaning against a tree when you found you needed it the most.

I have a featherweight 357 to pair with my carbine. It is brutal to shoot, but a dream to carry. This cannon would have some weight, but could save your life in bear country. I have read articles in my fly fishing mags about areas that require you to be "appropiately armed" to fish the salmon streams. The game wardens check for valid fishing license and rifle, shotgun, or handcannon. Lol. If memory serves, it's grizzly country in AK.

Holy Flinch Reflex, Batman! That looks painful, but you gotta give the guy credit for handling it pretty well! Seems like it would tame a grizzly!

I want to see the chronograph data, I bet most of the powder is burning after the bullet leaves the muzzle. He was shooting light 300 gr JHP bullets, no wonder the gun stays in his hands, let’s see some real hot and heavy bear ammo. His ammo is rated at 1880 fts from a rifle, I bet his was only going 1200... more like a .44 Mag. Big deal....

I have a SRH Alaskan clone (home built) and I carry handloaded .480 Ruger 400 gr 1050 fps hardcast bear loads. That is plenty wicked for me. It hurts even with a thumb brace.

I don’t see any purpose for the novelty gun in the video, he should send it back so they can put a proper barrel on it.... he can use that 3” one for a pen holder on his desk.

From experience with big boomers, I can tell you that going that short a barrel will, of course, increase muzzle whip and flash, but the reduced velocity will also reduce recoil, compared to a longer barrel, especially in a rifle cartridge like the 45-70, which would have to be very inefficient in a 3" revolver. Before I'd recommend a 45-70 snub nose for bear defense, I'd have to put it through a chronograph and crunch some numbers. Despite the rep of the 45-70, shooting it in a 3" barrel revolver might not get you any better performance than a dedicated big bore revolver round like a 454, 480 or even a 44 mag.

Couldn't you just take a 44 Mag revolver that you knew you could handle and shoot the bear twice?

Either a 7.5” or a 10”. I think even the ten inch is marginal for a .45/70 unless you handload with a faster powder, but it is way better than the one in the video.

Any of the shorty big bore revolvers like the Alaskan can perform significantly better, with good velocity and much less muzzle blast, if you don’t use factory ammo in them.

Well... I had a BFR .45-70 with the 7.5 barrel and I cut it to 5.5 inch to make it easier to pull out of my shoulder holster.
With a barrel as short as 3 inch you won't get a full burn of typical factory load powder.
It would work much better with loads using 13-15 gr. of Unique or maybe 2400 powder.

I sold mine and bought the Uberti/Winchester 1885 High Wall rifle in .45-70....a much better platform for that cartridge.
But I DID have fun with it!

I guess it would just be pretty cool pulling out a revolver and a handful of 45-70 cartridges at the range and letting her buck! I have a .454 in a Super Redhawk Alaskan, do I need it? probably not, but it sure is fun!
Whether for camp, bears, or just plain fun I think you better get your 45-70 (or maybe even two!!)
