I went to the range the other day(Sat 03/24)mainly to check out my new to me Dan Wesson 715 6” with vent rib and heavy under-lug(frame kind of reminds me of a S&W 686). This is one of the old Monson, Mass Dan Wesson's(pre-CZ). Overall, I am very pleased, which is good considering I traded one of my best shooting 1911’s for it.

All shots were from 15 yards off of a bench, 18 rounds on each target. Both the .38 Specials and the .357 Magnums were my reloads. The .38’s were 4.5 grains of W231 and the .357’s were 15 grains of H110, both behind a 158 grain copper plated bullet. Left target is .38 Special and the right is .357 Magnum.

I did shoot it a lot more than just the two targets pictured(about 100 rounds total), but the day was kind of soured when I had a squib load(my fault, it was one of my reloads). I didn’t have my dowel with me to clear it, so I benched it and went on to shooting my M1 .30 Carbine and Henry BBS lever in .357.

So, good day at the range with friends both shooting the guns and shooting the breeze.

I've handled some DW revolvers at an LGS near Independence, MO...really a solid handgun. I sure would like to get one someday, but for now the price is beyond the budget. And yet I'd also like to get a Freedom Arms model 83 in .357 Magnum; guess my "likes" in .357 revolvers are pretty much in the 1st-class arena!!

You said you "traded one of my best shooting 1911’s for it." That says you have other 1911s, so I think you made a good move to obtain the DW (I'm a wheel-gun guy, so I would say that --- nothing against 1911s). Do you only have the one barrel now, and maybe plan to get additional barrel assemblies? Changing them out looks like a pretty good system from what I've seen in the shop. BTW, there is another Henry Forum member, DWD445, who owns quite an impressive collection of DW revolvers. I hope he sees your post and brings in some comments.

Looking forward to more Range Reports and other comments about your "new" DW 715. It is a very sharp-looking revolver.

I only have the 6" barrel now, but I plan on getting the 4" and maybe the 8". And yes I do own other 1911's or I would never have made the trade.

Looks like it shoots well and just wondering what was the make of the 1911 you traded?

You have great tastes in revolvers. A Monson DW will never depreciate in value. Unless you had something very special in that 1911 you traded, you've made a good investment.

By the way, I just recently joined the ranks of the DW 715 owners (mine is a new one) and, like you, I did some trading to finance it (a couple of rifles). Absolutely no regrets. After years of headaches with new production revolvers, I think I've finally found one that is headache free, not to mention a joy to shoot. More on mine another time, though. Please post more on your 715. Nice to know there are other 715 shooters, here.

Smith & Wesson SW1911(108284)target model, all stainless.

Sounds like you did well on the trade - a neighbor recently bought back a complete DW with the four barrels and the original case he sold to someone like 29 years ago - don’t ask what he paid.....

Nice shooting. Looks like it likes the 357s better?
