The other day at the range, I was blissfully shooting away with my Colt Series 70 when I noticed something was amiss- my front sight was missing.

Talk about ruining a guy’s day. I called around and found out that this was definitely not a good thing. One place wanted $150-200 to cut a dovetail in the slide and mount a new sight. Woulda taken 3 weeks. The guy I think I trust more said he won’t cut a dovetail in an old Series 70- said that would ruin it- and says he can re-stake it. Says it will take about two weeks (I’m not optimistic), and will cost $60 plus the cost of a new front sight blade. So, my gun is with him.

Meanwhile, I’ve decided the only rational thing is... to buy a new 1911 to shoot while I’m waiting to get mine back.

I'm glad you found a reasonable gunsmith to make the repair. Those sights look pretty good. It's a great looking gun overall.

I had a front sight fall off my Colt 1991a1 commander. I had trijicons put on and they work great.

Looking forward to seeing your new one too.

I agree with not cutting a dovetail in that classic. Don't mess with that slide. Keep it as original as possible. If you need a 1911 just to shoot, plenty of affordable 1911s, now, that you can take to the range and shoot all you want without worrying about wear and tear or collectibility.

One feature I do like, though, is a model with a dovetail cut front sight, just in case, as per your experience. Wish our SA Mil-spec had one, but it's been such a great shooter, I don't mind.
