Hardened Screws for Uberti SAA Revolvers

Post by CT_Shooter » Thu Nov 13, 2025 10:30 am

First, I want to say this question would easily be answered by North Country Gal and I miss her. She's said her husband has been having a difficult time lately. I wish them both well and hope she returns to these pages soon.

I own two Uberti 1873 Cattleman SAA revolvers. As you already know, screws on these things seem to come loose if you just look at them wrong. I check and tighten them after every trip to the range, sometimes de-greasing and applying blue loctite. They still loosen. The first time it happened, shortly after I got the new 357 Taylor's SmokeWagon, its entire ejector rod assembly went flying, landing about five feet in front of me. Found all the parts, luckily. After that, I started to check every screw, every time. The screws on my .22 LR Cattleman do the same thing.

I've read the factory installed screws are not hardened, which might explain why, even though I use the proper screwdrivers, some of them look worn and beat up anyway.

A set of hardened screws is about $65 +. Individual screws add up to a lot more if you buy them that way. They very likely will also loosen, but maybe they'll hold up to regularly having to be tightened.

Has anyone replaced their originals with hardened screws and do you think it was it worth the investment?

I've had both my Cattleman 1873 and Remington 1858 replica's screw come loose shortly after purchase. I've tightened and loctited them and they haven't come loose since. I do still check though. Thank you for the ordering info. It'll be helpful to have at some point I'm sure.

Well you would be able to put a little more torque on them without damage to the head. I check mine also and so far nothing has fell off yet.
