Smallest handgun I've ever shot

Post by daytime dave » Sun Apr 06, 2025 9:37 am

I picked this Freedom Arms .22 lr belt buckle gun up from my favorite gun shop last year. It was nice yesterday and I took it and a box of CCI standard velocity shells to my small shooting area. I had always been intrigued by these small guns. I brought a large cardboard box to shoot at, in case it was all over the board. I had no idea what to expect, but wanted to be safe. There isn't much to this handgun. I put my work gloves next to it for comparison. I didn't want my hand to be in front of the cylinder or the barrel. I loaded the cylinder with five shots and got ready.
My first shots were pretty close to where I was aiming. One thing immediately got my attention. The spike protrusion, that comes out of the left side of the gun to hold it onto the belt buckle, was able to poke me each shot. It wasn't that painful as it was awkward. The second cylinder of five rounds went better. I adopted a finger and thumb grip and figured out where to hold to put the shot right where I wanted. When I figured that out, I got two right near each other. By then, I had had enough of that sharp stud, so only 10 rounds. If I shoot it again, I'll need something to cover it up. I was thinking of an old pencil eraser or something like that. I shot from 7 yards and was pleasantly surprised about the accuracy.

It was a very well made gun. The finger and thumb hold I settled on for the last two or three shots put the rounds right where I wanted and I didn't lose control of the gun. The belt buckle locking stud is an ingenious method of locking it into the buckle and getting it out easily. It is not easy on the hand. It is pretty neat for what it is.

Nice, has been a good while since I saw one of those belt buckles.
I can see where the spike could be a little nuisance.
The smallest one for me was a little 22 mag derringer.

That is the true definition of a pea shooter Dave. Freedom Arms makes good stuff. Looks pretty nice.

I have one without the buckle. 2 cylinders for LR and Mag. I put mine in safety so the hammer is in between 2 rounds and use the clamshell holster. There is one that points the barrel down and this one that holds the gun sideways. I can pull it out of the holster with a good tug, cock the hammer to shoot, and it doesn't print.

Back in the early 80s, still on active duty, I was stationed in Hawaii and sworn in as a Game Warden on the base so that I could legally carry a firearm on base, and more importantly, discharge one "off the range."

We were running a conservation project, trapping mongoose. A long story, I will write it up in it's own post... The point is, I carried that little NAA revolver in a pocket when running the traps, never failed me. I really liked it.

I like it, too. Very nice, Dave. How are the sights on that? Are they easy to see? Not expecting much on such a small; gun, but I recently traded off two of my little Ruger Bearcats because those tiny gutter sights have been too hard for me to deal with, anymore.

I have kept an eye out for one in the local shop, but so far haven't seen one in the last few years.
