Just had to do it

Post by GunnyGene » Fri Nov 10, 2023 7:36 am

Today is the 248th anniversary of the USMC, tomorrow is Veterans Day, and I'll be 79 in a couple weeks. Couldn't think of a better time to buy myself a birthday present. I'd been eyeballing this gun at a local shop for the last few months and finally went and got it yesterday.

This is a Colt, 100th Anniversary model of the 1911, produced in 2012. There were 4 Tiers (versions) produced. This one is Tier III (750 produced), NIB, never even had a cartridge in the magazine. I have no plans to fire it, although I am sorely tested to shoot it at least once. It's the only truly collectible firearm I've ever bought.

Happy anniversary to the USMC, happy Vetrans Day and a very happy pending 79th. Your celebration of these three milestones is perfect. Good looking pistol.

I have wanted to buy one of the Colt USMC 1911s, the Desert Earth colored ones with the USMC serial numbers? But I knew I would shoot it. One of my buddies bought two and hasn't shot either, they are sleeping in the safe. Congrats on the purchase. Every now and then I buy something for myself just because. When we get old, we have earned that right.

I do love 1911s, so I can appreciate that beauty. Not sure I'd shoot it, either, but hard to say. I'd be very tempted. Anyway, congrats and thanks for sharing.

Field stripped and took the grip panels off this morning to check for any possible corrosion since it left Hartford almost 12 years ago. Didn't expect there would be and there wasn't any sign of that or other issues. The gun is pristine.

The reproduction manual that was provided was interesting reading. Here's a couple pages that deal with external ballistics compiled by the War Dept. in 1912.

The manual can be downloaded in various formats from:

Congrats! It sure looks purdy! I don't think I would buy a gun I wouldn't shoot though.

I didn't think I'd ever buy a pure collectible either. But, I will shoot it under one condition: If one of the "worlds leaders" presses that Little Red Button.

It is a beauty! I think I would have to shoot it maybe one round….okay 1 magazine.
Maybe a few more…. I have no will power. But it would be well loved with every round fired.
Load on Sunday and Shoot all Week.......okay it's a Mare's Leg I will reload on Wednesday. ;)

To shoot or not? Do you have anyone to pass it down to? If not shoot it! That is a great looking 1911 and congrats to you!

There's a possibility that I could bequeath it. Or just drive up to Memphis, or some other big city, and do a Hunter with it. ;)

The 1911 is epitomy of what a handgun should be, in my humble opinion.

Nice find Gunny.

One of the things that I liked about this pistol is that, unlike most modern guns, it's not covered in oversize roll markings, warnings, etc. What's on it is the bare minimum and is small and discrete. No bar-codes or other extraneous/ostentatious bs. :)

Fine example of a 1911 there Gunny. You did well with that purchase. Enjoy!

My choice of pistol is the 1911 and that is a fine example.
Congratulations
