Stag grips on new 1911

A couple years ago I won a forum drawing for a very nice set of Stag grips for a 1911. Thought y'all would like to know that I finally found a home for them.

This is the TISAS (Turkish clone) 1911 .45ACP "Tanker" model - 4.25" barrel that arrived today. I chose this based on a couple of criteria: First, is that the stag grips had to fit on the pistol, which immediately ruled out any 1911 pistol with an ambi safety. Second, is that I wanted a 1911 in the original design, not something claiming to be the latest and greatest whiz-bang custom. That essentially narrowed the field to either an original 1911 or 1911A1 - both of which turned out to be way more expensive for one in good condition than I was prepared to shell out.

Enter the TISAS. I did a lot of research on this gun, including talking to a couple local people who own one, and it's generally well thought of. First field strip, inspection today did not reveal any obvious negative issues.







I haven't shot it yet, but likely will tomorrow.

I like stag grips on handguns. I've had several set up that way. I had a snazzy 9mm Colt lightweight Commander in the late 70s with Stag Grips from Eagle Grips on it. Loved that gun, and I shot it well. Unfortunately, one of my buddies, a LT assigned to shot it really well too. The LT got a special assignment with the DEA in the Keys. before his departure he begged and he pleaded for me to sell him that compact little Colt. "His life might depend on it," he cried.

His whining fell on deaf ears. "Build your own "Custom Commander," thought I. He doubled his offer. My hearing suddenly improved.

I still regret it to this day.

Gunny, I took a lookat the TISAS web site. Those seem to be pretty nice pistols. Like that US Army version. Even at MSRP, those prices are good.

To be honest, I had my doubts about a $400 1911 from Turkey. But after the research I've done, and hands on comparing with other makers, I have to say I'm impressed with it. Forged steel frame (full size) and slide, excellent fit and finish, etc. They did a very good job with these. The biggest problem seems to be making enough of them to satisfy demand. Could not find a single one in the past month or so in any of the local shops, and a couple of buddies told me they were very popular with folks looking for an exact copy of JMB's design for a reasonable price. They are imported by SDS. Ordered this one from the AF Base Exchange (AAFES) a week ago. I originally had my mind set on a 5" barrel, but those just were not available, and I didn't want to risk missing out altogether.

First target. 20 rnds, mix of Blazer 230grn aluminum, Fiocchi 230grn brass, and Hornady 185grn XTP. Had one feed jamup and that was with the Hornady. Probably my fault. Otherwise no problems. I definitely need more trigger time with this gun.
