I suggest that you set up a target with a 2” bullseye at the distance you want to kill squirrels. Fire 20 shots with your weapon of choice, offhand. The number of hits outside the black times 5 is your percentage of injured or missed animals. I can keep 50 rounds of Minimags inside a 3” bull at 25 yards with my 22/45, just barely, on a good day. I haven’t tried 40 yards but I know the results would be ugly….
Mount a scope with crosshairs so you can see properly. A typical 4 MOA red dot will completely cover a squirrel head at 50….

Nice setup on the Browning. A red dot is the way I would go, too.

My most accurate 22 handgun is my early '80s Colt Diamondback. Shoots like a dream. All my kids started learning handgun shooting on that gun, and it's inherent accuracy was a real confidence booster. But... All the Colt Snakes are going for premium prices these days. If it would ever be for sale it would bring more than five times what I paid for it. It will go to my oldest daughter.

Had to run some errands in town this morning, so stopped by my LGS to get hands on with the 3 under discussion. He pulled out 4 or 5 models of each for me to compare; different barrels, threaded/not threaded, etc. Had about dozen of them on counter including one very lightly used Browning. So played with each, and settled on the used Buckmark. $285. Didn't have that much cash on me, so gave him $50 to hold it for me for a few days.

Don't get too excited. I ain't as good as I once was.
But I'm as good once as I ever was.
