A revolver, I said " I never had much use for one, never said I didn't know how to use one". ;)

I recently added a Smith 642-1 to the fold. My CCW was approved and I realized that I don't have anything appropriate for that application. Almost all my other stuff is for various target shooting disciplines, or hunting. Did some searching around and came across the 642-1, which means no J-Lock, and it was in virtually unfired condition. When all was said and done, the price out-the-door with taxes included was < $370, so I feel a good deal. I bought a Don Hume pocket holster for it, but the finish on the leather is so nice and smooth, it comes out of the pocket with the gun more than I like. I'll be wire-brushing that nice smooth leather into something closer to suede, or maybe get an IWB holster for it. And maybe a different pocket holster. And maybe some new grips. And maybe the spring kit. (here we go..... ;) )

So far just shooting my wadcutter loads, and getting familiar with it. The tiny grip is something I'll have to get used to as well. I have an 8" steel swinger plate at 25 yards that I can hit 95% of the time, if I shoot deliberately and take my time. I know that's not what this little revolver is for, but it helps me build confidence in it. Growing up and living in NJ for the first 50+ years of my life, I never thought I'd ever get a CCW, but here I am. A whole new ball game and thought process to learn now.

Good grips will make a world of difference, as well as a quality spring kit. It's funny, many think you can't shoot short barreled guns well, but it just takes practice, like everything else. Most people don't put in the work.

The grips were the first thing to go on all our J frames, and the larger grips don't make That Much difference in your ability to conceal the gun, but recoil control and accuracy will increase dramatically.

:D
You can tell a lot about the character of a man...
by the way he treats those who can do nothing for him.

I don't look back at the things I can't do anymore with regret, I just look forward to the things I still can.

Thanks, I was hoping you'd reply. I'm looking at those VZ grips that are on the new revolvers from Lipsey's, the "high horn" grips. I find my hand rides up when I shoot this little revolver anyway, so may as well try a grip that goes up that high. The spring kit is a no-brainer, and I'm going to just buy the Wilson kit rather than try snipping that return spring.

I'm getting pretty comfortable shooting with it, getting used to the long heavy trigger pull. I never seriously shot double action before. Even shooting my revolver in Bullseye matches, I'd shoot single action. It's manageable with two hands, just a longer and more deliberate movement. I tried a couple shots strong hand, bullseye style, but the cylinder latch cut my thumb knuckle. I shoot my .22 and .45 with a high thumb for bullseye, but I wrapped my thumb on the 642 because the grip is so small. The gun rotated and the cylinder latch got me. So first blood is my own on this one.
