Re: Forcing Cone
I have a leading issue with my Model 10. I get some in the forcing cone, and deposition on the frame and cylinder. The forcing cone is rough and appears to have some chatter. It's bad enough that I won't shoot bare cast. I have thought about having mine recut. I can't seem to find a local gunsmith who will do it. I know you can rent the tool over the internet for a little over $30. Looks simple enough.
There is, I think, humor here which does not translate well from English to sanity. - Sanya

Re: Forcing Cone
I Cutting the forcing cone on a shotgun helps on felt recoil and help save the hull for reloading . I quit cutting my shotgun because I never felt it didn't really improve anything . Now this is my opinion and I NEVER try heavy stuff like 3" mags and or buck shot either .

recoil reduction is our primary interest .... if cutting the forcing cone should reduce any lead shot deformation and improve patterning (even slightly) that will be a welcome bonus .... we've never reloaded shotgun shells but certainly wouldn't rule out doing so somewhere down the line .... our oldest son is in the process of purchasing 26 acres of land (3 miles from our home) on which they will build their home and a shooting range ... once that is done we anticipate burning many more rounds

Re: Forcing Cone
picture showing the forcing cone in one of our 11-87 barrels .... as I understand it, the shell fits into the chamber ..... from the end of the shell there is a sufficient gap that allows the end of a shotgun shell to open .... the shot will travel from the end of the shell to where it is forced down sufficiently to travel through the barrel .... when we get the barrel back next month, I'll try to post a picture that will show the modification

Re: Forcing Cone
just got back from the gunsmith .... he had completed all but polishing the cutting cone .... we took it out and ran some 3" high brass BB shot through my 11-87 .... as a point of reference, that shotgun has had tens of thousands of shells fired through it since it was purchased in late 70's, so it is one which I've very familiar .... I could feel a reduction in felt recoil .... with a modified choke tube, shooting into a red clay bank at 25 yards I was impressed with the compact nature of the pattern .... the gunsmith is going to make arrangements for us to take the 30-06, 45-70, and both 11-87's to a range where we can test them when we pick them up in about a month .... between now and then we will be out of the area and are looking forward to seeing how they perform when we get back
