What the heck is It?

A forum member on a Land Cruiser site I’m on posted a pic of the rifle (below) but doesn’t know any history on it. It resembles a Winchester 1885, but the only markings on it are “patent pending 1901”, so I’m guessing it’s something else. Any of you smart old farts know what it is?

Looks like a single shot rolling block action. Holland and Holland perhaps? If it's a .256 caliber more than likely. Did he mention the caliber?

I would remove the furniture to see if there are any markings under them.

May be something under the fore end for sure. Easier if someone here recognizes it though;)

It looks like it could be a J-Stevens-Marksman-12-Rifle-22LR

Asked a friend, he says it looks like a Stevens model 44.

It does sort of look like a Stevens, but what I’m seeing that is throwing me is the trigger guard. It has an extra bit that encloses the trigger on the rear. The Stevens just has the swoop to the rear.
