Change of mind on Marlin

The guy I was supposed to meet on Thursday after Christmas to buy my 1947 39A went and looked at a 39A and sent me a PM and said they are to long and heavy. He said he bought a Henry 001. I sent him a PM back and told him no hard feelings on my part and I thought he bought a fine lever 22 by making the decision to go with a Henry. I want the guy to be happy with whatever decision he made the to get for his son. I totally agree the Marlin 24" barrel model is a little big for smaller shooters. I like them because they feel full size and I also prefer a pistol grip rifle. He thanked me for making him a very generous offer on the Marlin. So I sold the 39M and will be keeping the 39A. My wife thought I would be better off keeping the 39A because that one is my 4-wheeler scabbard rifle for winter trips to the mountain when we get the bigger amounts of snow on the ground. I may swap the scope to a straight tube Leupold before heading up there after Christmas. Here is the rifle and the way I was going to sell it to him for $400.


Not a bad rifle already set up to hunt with for $400. At least in my opinion. Also at 72 years old it is a Ballard barrel model instead of Micro-groove and actually even with the patina it has no rust or pitting of the metal. This is the only year 39A that had the aluminum magazine tube instead of brass.

Can't say I'm surprised you are keeping that one, bandit. When we sold off the other Marlins, we kept our 1946, mostly because it was a vintage with the factory drilled and tapped tang for a tang peep, a feature later versions didn't have. Might want to go that route with yours.

Here it is with the Marbles tang peep. Added a Lyman globe, too.

I agree wholeheartedly. Very good deal, all the more so when it came from someone who knows their stuff like you, bandit.

Yes it is- by at least $200 (maybe a bit more), and yes he will regret it.
Always loved my 39A from the day I bought it for $100 at an OKC gun show.
Mine has been in drydock' for a while (mostly because I 'stole' the Williams sight off of it for another rifle but I think I need to get another on the way for it, and give it a good tear down and cleaning and get it ready for the deadly pinecone wars!

Very seldom have an issue with the older pre-1988 39A's. I took this one out to test fire it and make sure every thing was right on it before I sold it. It had a little glitch on feeding the rounds straight into the chamber several times out of a full tube fired. Tried it again and did it did the same thing. I came home and pulled the scope and base off and sure enough just as I thought the cartridge guide screw was loose and not giving the loaded round a straight shot to the chamber. Tightened the screw and it fed every round as fast as I could cycle it. Even worked flawless up side down. Nice to know your rifle will feed upside down in case a squirrel attacks and gets you down and you have to rely on your rifle to cycle well while fighting off the attacker. Our squirrels here are ferocious. Glad I did test it out even though I didn't sell it. I believe I will keep it for now.
