Ruger 1022, Model 1102 - Good Deal?

It's been great reading about members' many 22 rifles lately, so it's resulted in my radar being tuned differently. This recently landed in my inbox, but I have no frame of reference regarding the Ruger 10/22 Lineup (other than it seems very broad and deep, with lots of SKUs), how prices are these days, what models have what reputation (other than that I have picked up that the quality of a Ruger 22, especially in the triggeraccuracy department, is a bit of a crapshoot).

All that said, does this offering do anything for any of you?

229 bucks for a new 22 Rifle seems great, but if the chances are 50/50 that it'll be a headache, and that I'll end up with a very large paperweight, I'll stick with my "you get what you pay for" philosophy. On the other hand, everyone loves a bargain, right?

It is a great base for a greater gun. If you like the idea yeah, get it.

Hey E^2 - that is an excellent price for a run of the mill Ruger 10/22. You will probably get a very reliable semi-auto 22LR with a not so good trigger. This rifle would make an excellent 25-50 yd plinker, but would probably disappoint you a little bit if you did any target shooting with it - it's probably going to be a 2.5 - 3 moa gun at best. But, Ruger 10/22's are classics and if you like to shoot 22LR, you probably can't go wrong adding one to your collection. We have four of them - all of them are fun to shoot - especially now that 22LR ammo is back on the shelf at Walmart...

We have a similar gun in a mid 1980s vintage SD 10/22 and it's one we have kept, though many other 10/22s have come and gone. Our SD is an enjoyable gun to shoot and will shoot just under an inch at 50 yards with the right ammo. Not a target gun, by nay means, as tractor dad mentions, but a fun gun to shoot, always. The only mod we made is to add the Ruger BX trigger and that did help with the trigger, quite a bit. Very easy install, too.

My advice is to buy that one IF it has the features you want and will be using it as is, with or without a trigger mod. If you plan to do extensive modding, though, you could save money by going with a less expensive base model.

That is a sporter model, and I would pay that in a heartbeat. I find the sporters much better looking than the standard 10/22 with the barrel band, and they feel more like a "real" gun to me...the standard 10/22 and takedown feel very toy-like in my big paws. If you're the kind of person who likes to tinker, the level of aftermarket parts for the 10/22 is astounding as well.

I'm such a rookie at this rifle biz, and I'm still getting my head around the idea of what I've seen on this forum with the 10/22s, where folks buy one (of whatever model) and then basically rebuild the entire rifle, from stocks to barrels to triggers. I can tinker, and the Rugers seem like they're pretty easy to work with, but I'm having to think long and hard about spending a couple hundred on the basic model, then a few hundred more (is that about right) re-building it.
That issue, plus the great way my SGC shoots, has me contemplating more variety, caliber-wise, vs. adding another .22.

The only thing is, the cost of .22lr stands alone in the ammo world, where you can get CCI blazer for $2.49 etc. This is especially true if you're close to your shooting range and shoot a lot. If you only shoot a few times a month, it's not so important.
