Saw this SS Ruger 10/22 Target model on sale at Sportsman's Warehouse and just couldn't resist that big fat shiny stainless steel bull barrel. We already have a couple of 10/22's, but I've always been curious to see how much better (if any) one of these tricked-out target models could shoot compared to a standard 10/22. Changed out the stock with a Magpul X22 Hunter (free floated the barrel) and swapped the trigger assembly out with a Kidd single stage dialed in at 2 1/2 lbs pull. Added a Bushnell 3-12X40mm rimfire scope with Burris signature "Z-Rings" (the ones with the self-aligning inserts). We sighted it in at 25 yds with some CCI standard 22LR and then shot a ten round group using a Caldwell Lead Sled DFT on a slightly wobbly portable steel bench. Not too shabby of group at 25yds (a little less than 1/4") so we moved on out to 50 yds with the same set-up. Ended up with a slightly less than 1" group at 50 yds. I bet this rifle is capable of cutting that in half with a solid bench and a better shooter.

A couple of things stood out -
1) A 10/22 can be pretty darn accurate with the right trigger, stock and barrel
2) CCI Standard at $3.49 per box of 50 rnds (from Walmart) is probably the best 22LR ammo for the price you can buy
3) Shooting 22LR is probbly the most fun/$ you can shoot - especially if you can do it on your own land...

Over the years, I've had some really accurate 10/22s and some clunkers, too. Just luck of the draw with a 10/22. The best of them included a Sporter Deluxe, a Target like yours (with the factory stock) and, interestingly, the pistol version in a Charger. (The Target was great with good ammo, but I also remember it for being a 22 that hated Federal Auto Match more than any 22 I've ever owned. Why it hated Automatch so much, I just don't know.) All of these were legit half inch at 50 yard shooters with the right ammo and a shooter who was patient and willing to work with the gun, instead of blasting away in a hurry and trying to empty the mag.

Still have the SD and every now and then we take it for a shoot. Put the BX trigger in it and called it good enough. Your post reminds me we're overdue to dust off our 10/22.

Looks really nice! This is the second 10/22 thread in two days. Must mean I better get mine out and dust it off.

All this .22 talk lately, and especially the numerous 10/22 owners that have been heard from, got me investigating the line. What a mind-boggling array of variants. So much depth in that product line, and then you get into the distributor exclusives and it really gets crazy. And then the aftermarket stuff. Wow.

one thing I like about semi auto target shooting is you don't have to reset.

Nice job Tad. I had one years ago I changed barrels on and set up in one of there laminate stocks. It shot very well also. But like some other guns
I have done this with I sold it and should have kept it. Last 10/22 I bought was a takedown and it shot terrible. So I got rid of it to. Al

I actually put my 10/22 up for sale after shooting my SGC. I honestly can’t think of a situation where I’d prefer to shoot the 10/22 over the Henry. They’re both great guns, but I actually enjoy shooting the lever a whole lot more. With the octagon barrel, it’s very much like a heavy target barrel, only way cooler!
