Bucket List Rifle

Saw this nice new Winchester 1886 at the LGS yesterday. I have always wondered what it would be like to handle and shoot one these big 1886 Winchesters in 45/70. The John Browning design rifles like this and the 1892 have that ingenious double bolt locking bar action that has always just kind of fascinated me. I've even had a picture of this exact rifle on the wall next to the computer for the last couple of years. It's one those pricey guns you think about but never actually buy because it's kind of hard to justify the cost - one those "bucket list" guns that you think maybe someday....Anyway, I should have never asked to handle it because I knew what was probably going to happen next - and sure enough it followed me home. Here it is right out of the box - still has the factory grease on it. First impression is that this is a very heavy rifle with a big octagon barrel - probably at least a lb more than the Henry version. Once I get it cleaned up and it warms up a little here in the valley, I'll take it out and do a comparison shoot off with the Henry CCH 45/70.

I just drooled a little bit, okay enough that I have to go change my shirt.
It's a beauty.

I had the same disease Tad. I will try to get a picture of mine up. I found a premier grade with a matching knife. I threw up a bid on GB and I thought no way will that fly. Guess what it flew from Oregon to my house. I havent shot it yet and my buddie keeps telling me shoot it. Al

You did very, very well on that beauty, tractordad. I had the plain version for awhile and, let me tell you, that Browning was able to print 1" to 1.5" groups at 100 yards with factory open sights. Amazing. I sold it ONLY because it's massive weight. Just too much for me to handle other than shooting off a rest. The weight issue is becoming more and more important to me in my old age, but that was one super rifle.

Those are both great looking rifles. Al's going to need a Henry Wildlife Model for proper comparison, though. Gotta keep the playing field level ;) .
