Traditional Bolt Action Rifle

The biggest "hole" in my collection is a center fire bolt action rifle. I need some recommendations.

I want a traditional walnut and blued steel rifle, .308 or .30-06, with an "American" stock. No cheek piece, and no full stocks. I'd like it to be accurate- 1 MOA, or better, with a good trigger. The fewer plastic parts there are, the better.

Nothing "luxe," or fancy grade, just a nice, classy rifle, probably in the $700-900 price range.

Suggestions, anyone?

Winchester Model 70?

They say the current Japanese models are as good as they've ever been.

Just sayin'

I would recommend a CZ.

I'm a long time fan of Remington 700 BDL's .... I don't know anything about the quality of the ones being produced today but do know those from 80's & 90's were very accurate

I have read the same, from a reliable source and not from a Winchester add. And, a model 70 compact, featherweight, about $900. Comes in .308.

I think I'd consider a 700 if I could find a really nice older one. No way am I buying a new one, though.

I second Sir Henry's recommendation of CZ.

in thinking about it, the main reason I purchased and used bolt action rifles is closing the bolt literally locks the bolt into the barrel .... no compression loss .... the first lever action rifles I know of to come with a rotary locking bolt are the Browning BLR's .... we have one chambered in 308 that was built in the 60's and its still an extremely accurate rifle .... Henry's Long Ranger uses a rotary bolt and has been reported to be extremely accurate .... with that being the case and knowing the quality of the product, if I was in the market for a 308, I'd probably go with a Long Ranger and not a bolt action

I liked the CZ 550 American. Sadly, though, it's been discontinued, and replaced by the 557 Sporter. The 557 is more of a carbine, and is not a Mauser action. If I could find a really nice 550, it would do the trick, I'm sure.

That would be my second choice.

My buddy has been trolling the pawn shops around here lately. He just picked up a Springfield 1903-A3. $175 out the door. It needed a rear sight, under $50. It has some use, but not worn out. Sport stock, not milspec. He has seen a number of them in various conditions and prices in the local pawns.

I would love a nice A-3. Don't think I want a "sporterized" one, though.

My buddy is looking into getting a military stock for it, and perhaps put it back in original form. Looks like a good shooter regardless of furniture. It has a decent stock on it, although I would refinish it if it were mine. Sloppy job of applying finish IMO. Lots of parts available for the 03A3s. Good deals are out there, if you look, and are willing to take on a project.
