Now it's truly not "new", but about as new as an AE Model as I've seen in a long time.
It's a 16" saddle ring trapper, and it cost me just a little more than a new Henry would have, but is just cooler to me.
I opened it up and the inside is completely spotless of any wear marks, even the top of the hammer black as the rest of it. Not anymore though.
The action was very stiff and almost sticky. I put a couple rounds in the mag and it cycled but just not smooth. I put 5 rds. in it and first round cycled, but when I went to eject, it ejected but 2 rds. slipped out of the mag and under the lever. My first thought was this is going to be a jam-o-matic like the new Rossi R95 357 I bought back in Jan. That is still back at the mother ship. But,
I pulled the mag tube cap, dumped it and those other 2 rds. Being that the Winchesters guts fall out the bottom it did make it easy to fiddle around and get them back into the mag tube and out of the rifle.
Put it all back together, and sprayed some clp all in the action and worked it for 5 to 10 mins. Blew most of that off and wiped it down. Put some rounds in it and after cycling a few through it, it runs fine now.
I put 20 rds through it, 10 158gr xtp's and 10 of the 180gr pugnose. All ran perfectly without a hiccup, shot it at 25 yds, then from the patio, so 45ish, and only miss the 10" once on a hurried second shot.
Then put up a couple plates and from about 35 yds slung 5 each at those.
The left was the 180gr and the xtp's on the right. It's a late 80's production so not one of the true collectibles which is fine by me. I'm a shooter much more than a collector.

And one with an early AE 30-30 Ranger for the barrel comparison.


And there will be some rounds going through this over the weekend.

Wonderful work to get it running and looks liker it shoots, well. Congrats. I really like those Trappers. That short barrel length is perfect for revolver cartridges. Great rifle to carry. Trapper style lever guns are awesome.

It's nice to add to the stable. I had to buy another just recently. LOL.
Before I condemn anything, I'm like you, I give a new gun a good cleaning... it often works.
Glad you get to keep your shooter.

Sounds like a fine idea there, Al.
Only thing is I don't have that much 357 loaded at the moment.
Close to 150 though.
Maybe load more this evening.
I do like how this leather scabbard covers the majority of it with the short barrel.
And it already had it's first tour through the woods yesterday.

I put a few dozen more rounds through it yesterday.
A friend asked, if it would shoot 38's like the revolvers do?
I said yeah it should, so I ran some through it and they cycled and shot flawlessly.
I once loaded 2 each, 158gr fmj 38 spl., 158gr xtp and 180gr PN, 357's.
But sporadically, not any 2 of the same together.
It cycled and shot them without issue.
This is a fun thing to handle and shoot.

Yeah, I like scopes also. This one won't get one though, when I get the new R95 357 back I may add one to it for a while.
Only about a third of the levers are scoped.

Great looking rifle

I never paid attention to trapper sized rifles until my Henry Carbine and Winchester Trapper.

Nice pick up there. A nice, handy rifle. Congratulations.

Congrats Randy! The 94AE is a fine rifle and in a pistol caliber is fun to shoot. I have a 94AE with 20” barrel in 45 Colt. Very easy to burn through 100-150 rounds in a range session. Enjoy.

You are fortunate.

They can decimate a food plot. Four big hogs have been killed on my primary hunt property in the last few years and it seems that when one is killed, I get some respite for a period of time but they seem to return. They come up out a a creek bottom to do their damage.
