Another Marlin project

Post by Redthies » Sat Mar 02, 2024 12:42 pm

I’ve been on a bit of a buying and selling roller coaster lately. I bought a Weatherby .270 for my wife, in hopes that she will help me fill the freezer this year. She is a fantastic shot, and has great eyes for spotting game. So with that purchase, I can free up a bit of play money by selling my 7-08. I personally dislike carrying a bolt rifle, so I don’t need more than one in a smaller caliber. I can borrow hers if I need to. I have an agreement to sell the 7-08 in play, so I will use the proceeds to A, buy suspension for my project Bronco, and B, buy a set of walnut furniture for my 336BL. I’m going to order a straight stock set from Boyds and make it a Texan. I’ve always hated the pistol grip on the BLs. I’m torn between re-shaping the big loop, and getting a square lever off a guides gun or similar. The only real difficulty will be milling off the extra material on the lower tang, but I have many options for that, ranging from a hack saw and die grinder to a Haas 4 axis mill.

Now do I go with the traditional darker wood (left) or pay the $30 more for lighter wood (right)?

I went darker. No point in spending extra for a slightly different tone. It will look more factory anyway.

Thanks guys! Having never milled a tang before, do you think I need to be as “heat sensitive” with it as one would with cutting down a barrel? I’m not going at it with a cutting torch or anything silly like that, but I will likely use a die grinder with burr and flap wheels for some shaping. Thoughts?

And a big thank you to one of our members for helping secure a factory straight lever for me!

Hey Red, I think you can just change the floor plate from a curved one to a straight one.
Check out some of the threads over on MO, I believe that's what most have done.
Now how hard those plates are to find, well that I don't know.

There are 7,360 curved trigger plates on eBay for $20-$30. There are zero straight ones. I’m going to fire up the mill:)
