My CZ 452 "Squirrel Rifle"

Post by bandit1250 » Wed May 18, 2022 9:09 am

I bought a CZ Scout 452 a few years back and it was to short in the stock for me. I bought a CZ Trainer stock that fits me real well and put it on the Scout. This little rifle is very accurate. I have a 2-7 Leupold rimfire scope on it. The Trainer has screw up the fore arm that the Scout doesn't have so I pulled a bullet from a Federal round and put some oil in the empty case to kill the priming mix and glued it in the hole. The Federal F is for my last name initial. BigAl will be along with some photos later.

Don't worry about getting older and still doing stupid stuff. You'll do the stupid stuff as always, only much slower. Hold my beer and watch this.......

I do like the CZ Trainers or the even longer barrel Ultra lux version for shooting the CZ tangent sights, but the UL with the 28" barrel is a real pain to manage even just shooting at the bench. I can see why you went with the Scout setup with the Trainer stock.

By the way, the Trainer and UL stocks are beech. Some I've had had very nice figure and others hardly any, but beech is one tough wood, much tougher than walnut or birch. Beech is widely used in the air gun world because of its durability and toughness. Makes an excellent wood for a target stock, too, because of its stability and uniformity. It's the standard wood on my HW springers or my CZ 200 T, below. Not to be confused with cheap hardwoods used as substitutes for walnut.

The beech stock on the Scout from the Trainer has nice grain for beech. I did a full recut on the checkering and made the borders round top instead of flat top borders that I hate the looks of. The flat top borders look to machine cut for me and the factory checkering is not pointed up like real hand cut. Glad somebody likes my little walk around squirrel rifle. I was beginning to wonder if members maybe thought I ruined my rifle. I do still have the original stock and box with the contents if I ever sell it.

Back in the day, I used a lot of short barreled rifles for squirrel hunting. Did just as well with them as more traditional long barrel 22s.

I am starting to regret passing on the 452 that was for sale recently here locally. It had a 16 or 16.5 threaded barrel and I figured that was too short for my needs. I was thinking something more in the 20” range but after reading yours and NCG’s reports sounds like the shorter barrel would have been just fine. Water under the bridge now as it sold in just a few days for $990.00 including several upgrades.

Not surprised at that price. There were some rare 452 versions with short barrels andy threaded barrels that showed up in this country back in the day. I actually had a 453V (now very hard to find) with a 16.5" barrel and threaded for a suppressor. Let it go, because we also had a 453V with a fluted barrel that we liked better. Still have that one.

This came up in one of my email adverts. I think this with a dead air mask would make a fantastic squirrel gun.
